What are you trying to put it in? I have a 9 inch sitting around the shed that is converted to fit e-series.

Ah ok yeah can't answer that one. I know my axle tubes were cut and e-series ones welded on for mine to work.

There are a few different bolt patterns on the 9" housings, and a few different bearing sizes as well. If you look around, you'll find a few aftermarket setups, but there not cheap. A later model Factory setup, from a big US model, may have the same housing, but you will have hassles finding the right one, and then getting parts for it. The E-series brakes are a cheap and easy alternative. As above, the easiest way is to use the e-series axle tubes and ends, in a 9" centre section. If your keen, I know a guy who does 9" conversions, but he is in WA, so it makes it a bit exxy. Being a leaf spring car, the spring mounts are easy to fit, and are available aftermarket to fit to a new/modified housing.
You may be up for new or modified axles as well, depending on what brakes, etc, you use. Also, you have to make sure your wheels fit over the new set up as well. I reckon just replace the axle seals in the 9", clean or replace the brake shoes, etc, and leave it alone for a while. Maybe later you can find the right diff, with the discs you need, as a bolt in job.

Not a cheap exercise. Hoppers Stoppers in Vic have a 9" kit to convert to discs but until the car gets here as Sooty said you wont know which end plates configuration it has.
Im tipping being a 69 model car and the way Ford Australia jsut imported driveline parts from the states and fitted them that you will be looking for an XY width 9". Unfortunaltely they are dear as poison and not available in disc neither. How far are your tyres off the outer guards now? Reason I ask is that a XB onwards diff is only an inch or so wider then an XY diff. If you search for a XB XC ZG ZH Falcon or Fairlane with a factory 351 you will get a disc brake diff. If you could fit the slightly wider track under the stangs a*** you will have more options open to you , get disc brakes and will get a 2.75 centre. The 428 will still have insane amounts of power to get up and go with the higher ratio diff but will make a HUGE difference in economy travelling around your way. If you want to look down that path once I swap it over I can bring the old wags diff up for a test fit and make sure its sweet. As far as mounting and track goes its exactly the same as an disc brake 9". I reckon around your way there is bound to be an old LTD or something sitting in a paddock. Even if it costs you $3K you could get your diff and make the money back up by wrecking it out. People pay dumb prices for old LTD and Fairlane stuff now if its in pretty good nick.

I honestly didnt know there was a disc brake option.
The yanks are a long way ahead of us hey. Maybe an australian setup could be made to fit. Mod the mounting brackets if required with out touching the diff housing then its just trying to sort out the different wheel bearings. What is a Marti report? I ahve heard it a few times and owned an american car but have never actually seen one.

The '69 should use the same track width as XR-XY, as Matt said, but remember the springs are going to be XR-XY width as well, meaning they are closer together than the XA-XH/E-series wagon leaf spring mounts. If you can use the wider diff, you will still have to move the spring mounting plates on the axle tubes. If you try and fit the later model diff to the earlier model springs without moving the mounts, it will eventually bend the diff housing. Not fun, and will get messy real quick.
I reckon you will be better of building a whole new rear end, with a new housing, e-series axle tubes, new mounts, E-series brakes, new billet axles, and a new centre with 3.00:1 (or maybe 3.25:1). Just put the 3.9/drum brake rear end aside for later, etc. If you can source the bits yourself, and just have to pay for axles, and labour, it will come in relatively cheap. And by using E-series rear brakes, there cheap to fix/replace, you can use the original mustang handbrake lever, plus it's stuff you already know. Just my thoughts.

Ash I knew a guy in the Fairlane club a few years ago that swore that ea rear discs and calipers were a straight up bolt-on for 9" ers he even gave me a set of them to try (which I haven't ) he swore blind his neighbour had them on his V8 cortina, but most people don't seem to think they do. I know RRS also make a rear disc conversion but seems most kits need bigger wheels than 15".

I have converted the 9" in my Firebird to disc brakes.It was a pretty easy conversion.
I used XF Falcon calipers, brackets & backing plates. They should bolt straight upto the Mustang with minimal machining . The mounting brackets needed drilling in my application to mount them at the front of the discs to miss the shocks. |

IIRC, EA-ED use the same rear (disc) brakes as XF, do they not? If not the same, they look very similar, and might be easier/cheaper to find.....

Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm sure they will lol!) aren't XF ventillated whereas EA are solid? I'd go XF for the win.
