Car is 1996 4.0l Fairmount sedan with slippy automatic gearbox.

I have been reading some similar posts but cant figure out what would be the problem.
Its slipping or going neutral if you drive around with it for a while.
Rpm goes up for few sec until it gets the grip again.
Always happening on 4th gear when engine is hot, car is loaded and making some turns.

Just checked and topped up the oli. It looked clean red. So it cannot be problem.

Can I improve gearbox cooling somehow?

it sounds like the bands in the box are slipping. u could always swap it for one that has lower km's?

Sorry it sounds more like changing to neutral than slipping because when it goes back then it makes bang and wants to fly away with smoking tyres.

I had a similar problem, but in first. Cheapest fix turned out to be a second hand box. :(

By slightly increasing the line pressure, the transmission changes harder from one gear to the next. This not only reduces heat generated within the clutches and bands in the transmission, but also will increase transmission lift and reduce wear.

You are probably right. When gearbox is cool no such problems occur.

i have the same problem (hence the reason i am goin manual) narrowed it down to a shagged S5 shifting solenoid bout $585 genuine ford part from coventry's you can get an aftermarket version for about $200 but is adjustable and installation by urself could prove to be a daunting task.. i dont know how much it would cost to get it done professionally but my guess is about the $400 mark inclusive of solenoid cost..
