thanks blackjack...at least u didnt blast me.. i knew what i was doing but i just didnt know that taking out 3 coils would make it that low. it was only a cheap experiment.


you obviously didn't know what you were doing!!! why take a risk like that?? it does no good for all you suspension parts, bushes, steering or chassis sitting that low on the bump stops!!

how hard is it to use an angle grinder...the only part i wasnt sure of was how much diff each coil would make...it's not like i've read the "How to cut your springs for dummies" book yet...

it's not as simple as using an angle grinder, that sort of treatment will weaking the metal of the springs. But I guess since you're riding the bump stops you wouldn't be putting the springs under any stress anyway.

Springs are made of speacially treated steel alloy, heat (such as that caused by prolonged angle grinding or 'gas axe') severaly weakens the metal making it brittle - NOT what you want for a spring where flexability is what is required.

Again, there is NO safe way to cut springs - precisely why it's illegal.

hahahaha my old car had chopped springs in it! (came with the car)
it sat ridiculously low. and it stuffed up the whole point of having a progressive rate spring! every speed hump or even bump. the car would just drop till it hit something. it wouldnt absorb anything! wen i went to get the rwc for wen i was selling it. the guy had to jack up my car to fit the hoist under it and then wen it was up on the hoist the springs jumped out!

anyway to get to the point. theres no way id ever consider chopped springs after that. i should go back to the guy i bought it from and get my moneys worth for springs. coz it was supposedly "roadworthy" wen i got it :lol:

Why bother with performance mods, if you're then going to go and completely RUIN your rides handling by cutting the springs?
Oh wait.

Reasons for NOT cutting springs (Apologies for repetitions)

1.) The springs become brittle where they are cut.
2.) they no longer put pressure on the strut when going over a
pothole - spring could pop out unless tied to the strut
3.) springs are designed to function as a complete unit.
the overall behaviour of the spring changes, and
may not match that of the shock, or the rest of the suspension
components. Remember that the springs and shocks
are primarily in place to keep the tyre in contact with the road-
if you change one bit, you need to change the rest to make the suspension function properly
4.) It is illegal to cut springs (probably because of the above)

It just amazes me, that in this era of Lowered Springs being so dirt cheap, that someone would go back to the stone age practice of cutting springs.
It screams what I think is the definition of 'rice'.
Cosmetic mods that actually decrease performance.
