I know what your saying, 2 of my best mates work for racv.. Ive heard about some odd things, but to be honest most cars wont get caught out.. Reason being my car didnt get caugh out for how low it was..
Whan the accident has occured, the car goes to the panel shop of your choise OR if on weekends of afterhours it goes to a insurance holding bay where it will be later dispatched to the panelbeater of your choice.. The panel shop then does a quote of the repairs and submits it racv for example, racv will either approve it or come and inspect the vehicle themselves depending what panel shop you go to.
Some panel shops do all digial photo quotes, which the motor assessors wont have to attend the location to assess the vehicle, but use the pictures supplied - if you goto a shop that doesnt use the digtal phtography method then yes they will come inspect your vehicle n if your wheels are off or this inspector knows what rims genuinely fit the moedel you may be caught out; yet not always Q'd! If the cars passes and goes in to get fixed, and the panell shop notice the adaptors, they wont always word this to the insurance as they will loose the job and in turn have a mark put against them for secondary details missed in the 1st inspection, ie they report back saying we missing this the 1st time and now you gotta come down, which has wasted the insurance co's time previously.
Shows how big a gamble it really is and there is NO such thing as a straight panel beater i tell u - they all bend the rules if not to help customers like u with adaptors or make more cash.

I know all this as ive been along with mates doing motor assessing, applied for the jobs, taken their tests and read the general reports.

Thats all good in a minor accident. However the police will examine a car if there was a death involved in the accident. The Police report will go to the insurance company, and then you are f**k both ways if the spacers are illegal and/or not report to you insurance co.

truth is lifes a b**ch, spacers for the wrong wheels are illegal and any sort of accident that involves bulk cash theres a risk they will find it and not pay up.

if you reckon you can take em off, then they will just bust you for the wrong offset which considereable changes the vehicle dynamics (braking corning etc) from the aus standards which the car is marketed at.

ive heard that some adaptors are legal , and they no way stuff up the strength of the hub. but this probably is a grey area so whatever ya gonna do tread carefully.

but the wheels look good man ;)

i dont understand how they can not fit an AU. AUs have their wheels offset almost completely inwards so what the hell car are they made for then if they don't fit an AU properly?

They are off a 2004 cadillac seville. I suspect that the tyres had a bit to do with hitting my suspension as they are only 225 50 series but when l put them next to the 235 45 series tyres i had they were around 10mm wider so figure that one out??

What is the difference between wheel spacers and hub adapters?

Cheers

A wheel spacer is just a disc with holes in it. Wheel bolts onto existing wheel studs.

Picture below is a Hub Adaptor

I posted earlier in this thread, that a Vic roads inspector would consider them the same as spacers and therefore illegal. He knew what spacers were but had never seen or heard of adaptors. So his answer was based on what I discribed to him.
