whats the go with the alloy tail shafts are they better to have than a steal one. and what are they worth

They are better than steel for 1 peice driveshafts. The wagons and most utes in the BA and BF range use them (wagons 3 1/4 inch & utes 3 3/4 inch) The EF and EL XR's use a 3 1/4 inch alloy. The main reason why they are better than steel is that the simply have less imbalance at higher speeds than steel if flexing occurs. I made a 3 1/4 inch for mine and was alot better than steel but have a slight driveline angle problem after lowering my EL. Im thinking it may not be the complete problem as the muffler does resonate a little. Anyways depending on your trans (auto/manual) just go to the wreckers and pick one up out of an XR. measure from weld to weld but yoke eye to yoke eye is better. make sure the XR one is the same length and slip flange and it will go straght in. If you do change the shaft make sure to mark on the diff where the yellow on the shaft lined up as well as the trans its easier to remove the shaft with the dot from the trans facing downward and put in park or in gear so it doesnt move.

I just notice today when i took it to get a quote for a new exh system and noticed that it had a alloy tailshaft.

Been chasing up the history of my EB found that the last owner put a low Ks V8 out of an el XR8 with the 4 speed auto, so my guess the tail shaft came from the same car the v8 and auto came from. as i see allot of yellow maker paint all over it saying EL TPS and so on on diff parts.

So your EB already has the alloy in it? the yellow dots should be beside the welds at both ends. Forgot to add to first post i wouldnt pay anymore than $100 for a second hand alloy driveshaft.

thanks, what i might do if i see a few about is grab em and store em away, as a mate of mine picks cars up to be taken to sims metal allot.

Also is it true that the alloy tailshafts twist easy, just a few people have told me they do.

None of the wreckers I have been to charge any different for alloy or steel shafts. Both are around the $75 mark. The advice I have been given is that alloy is better for speed but is much more easy to damage than a steel shaft. Having said that the only driveshaft I have managed to break was steel.

and I wouldnt be too worried about twisting the shafts :lol:

how can you tell if the tailshaft is alloy or not? I have one tailshaft in my EL and one sitting in the garage...not sure which is which or if they are the same.

Thought I'd might check if it is alloy or not.

I've looked at mine, what a big bulky unco looking thing. Must loooose so much power through it. How do most go about losing less power through these things?

The steel is 3 inch and the alloy is 3 1/4 inch.
