Yep, I've had SHOCKING diff whine for the last year or so, been getting worse all the time...and the clunks and grinds dont sound too good either!!

I'm going to pop into a transmission place this afternoon and get an idea of whats wrong and how much...

What sort of price shuld I expect to pay for a reco 3.45 LSD fitted?

Anyone had this done? I just want to make sure I dont get ripped...

Cheers

Well, I went to the tranny place in town earlier.

Apparently, NO ONE in Nowra does diffs!

What they do is remove diff, send to Wollongong (next day delivery), the company up there dismantle it, call up first place and tell problem and cost...then repair it and send it back, 4 days later....

I asked for a ball park figure, he said I'd be lucky to get much change from $1500...

Another possibility is to buy one myself from somewhere, but that can be pot luck I guess...would be a much cheaper option but I wouldn't buy one without knowing it's condition.

Damn, $1500 for a 3.45 LSD that's gonna burn the LSD in no time anyway?!

Personally I'd be looking for a good second hand one which can be had for $500 and under if you really search.

Either that, or if you've already got the 3.45 gears, get a lockrite installed (a bit like a detroit locker - full locker under loads, but single spinner all other times/cornering). You should be able to do that for less than $1500 and you'll have a setup that won't wear out instantly like the normal LSD's do.

I've done my fair share of Ford and Holden LSD's and all it takes is a few decent brakies, and you lose your LSD effect.

I found a wrecker/parts place in VIC that can do a reconditioned LSD for $880 incl postage...does this sound reasonable, considering it's been reco'd?

I've written back to him, asking about what exactly has been done/changed, and if it has any kind of warranty.

Buying one from a wrecker scares me, as they wont have been reco'd...

They got back to me:

They supply the diff housing with reconditioned centre,
new bearings and clutches, and gears if neccessary.
Using my own axles.

That comes with 6 months warranty.

Seems not too bad from looking around...anyone know if it's a decent price?

Seems like a resonable price, it cost me close to $500 just to get new cones put in my centre and for them to supply the bearings, I did the installation and setup myself.

wreckers are wreckers, some will rape you, others will f**k you, occasionally tho... you might get a good one. I'd say ask 'round about their reputation, but your in NSW. Personally haven't heard anything 'bout 'em. If your lookin gin Vic, Hit Ferntree Gully Wreckers... they're a sponsor and are reputable...

Yea thats the only thing..whether they are reputable...

FTG have them a little cheaper I think, but they aren't reco'd...they're straight from wrecks....I couldn't spend that much money on something I dont know the condition of.

The fact it has a 6 month warranty does make it a little better I suppose.

Well, I've decided to go for it...I got him to include the axles etc.. in the price too, to make things a little easier, so it's a complete assembly.

I had a read of the Gregories, and it looks easier than I thought to remove the diff. I guess all I'll need to do is swap over the brake assembly etc, which shouldn't be too difficult, and find someone in town with a press to do the axle bearings.
