Guys, I'm hoping someone has had the same problem as I have noticed this on my 6cyl EF and now my V8 NL Lane... its bad enough now that I want to do something. Whenever I go over a small bump or rough/a*** road there is a squeaking coming from the rear end... its reasonably loud and sounds like metal on metal. I'm certain its not rubbers as it isn't consistent and I wondered if its something in the handbrake assembly or brake calipers. I'm going to lube up the brake slides and anything around there that might squeak but thought someone might know straight up what the prob is likely to be... anyone ? Its embarassing !

haha, just read back through the post... you can't right c.o.a.r.s.e as in rough/c.o.a.r.s.e road, it thinks you've written a.r.s.e, ok so not relevant but hey...

shockies, sway bar rubbers to the body, rubbers on radius rods... basically anywhere there are rubbers in the suspension. There is a special rubber grease to use.

Usuall suspects are, upper & lower ctrl arm bolts, D bushes, and make sure the lower shock bolts a bloody tight.

thanks guys but I really don't think its rubbers, just not the same squeak... and the rubbers on both cars were in good nick, the EF had brand new poly bushes put in as well... this is a real metal on metal squeak... hard to describe but it could be just the brake pad metal sqeaking inside the holder... will try and sort it today !!! Will post when fixed !

Hey man,
I had a similar problem a while ago. Turned out when i replaced my shockies at the back one of the bottom bolts on the shock was loose and the shock was moving around causing the noise. Not sure if you changed ur shocks recently but it might be an idea just to get under there and tighten em all up... |

ever thought it could be your hand break? mines making a noise every now and than, a mate of mine had the same noise, he gave it abit of a tighten and was fixed. give it a look if you havn't fixed it yet.

And does the squeak stop when you apply the brakes? Drives me crazy coming up our dirt drive way, just every bump emiitts another squeak from the rear. And, brother, if you sort it out, you can come fix mine too!

IS it the stock diff?
When i had my EF Gli, i had an XR Diff putinto it, and due to the different control arms it made a sound like you are describing. We put EL EX control arms into the beast and it fixed the noise. Cheers, Adz

I had similar if not the same squeek from the rear of my EL. I gave up looking for it but when servicing the rear brakes i bumped the rear rotor and there it was the same squeek. I narrowed it down to where the inner of the rotor mates onto the axle flange. Lubricate it and it may solve your problem.

All it was the drivers side bottom shockie bolt needed another 1/8th of a turn. Amazing how such a large noise was fixed with such small turn of a bolt

Well I finally sourced the issue after putting up with it for too many months - I got under it thinking it had to be shocks or the watts linkage - but alas, the shocks were extremely tight and the rubbers on the linkage are fine... traced it all back to the brake slides - thumping the wheel is enough to make them squeak. They weren't seized at all but just needed more lubrication - so to anyone changing brake pads or wishing to get rid of that darn squeak from the rear - LUBE BRAKE SLIDES !!!!!
