WITH WARPED DISKS (see the above post) you *SHOULD* notice a "pulsing" through the brake pedal also. Although, so saying this, the steering wheel "judder" is by far the more noticable of the two.

I still lean towards advising getting the disks machined and getting them to put the wheels back on at the proper torque settings for the wheel nuts (about 104nm I hear)....

There are multiple other threads on this site with regards to these issues.

I see there's a SLOTTED set of brake rotors (disks) available from these guys ---

A New Zealand crowd do SLOTTED and DIMPLED (rather than DRILLED), but the slotted thing should help the even heat and grime build up... The uneven heating, cooling and grime on the notorious front disks add to the problem.

Wheel Alignment should only be $50, so worth a crack. Machining disks should be about $50. Wheel bearings about $40 (if you put them in yourself). New disks $180 - $360.

WHEEL ALIGNMENTS are worth their wieght in gold but you may have to go through everything from the wheel bearing to the steering rack!

Trial and Error - Just start eliminating. Best of luck, and let us know how you get on!

On my to work which is mostly 60 kms then a 90km road on the turn off to the street were my place of employment is i held my foot on the brake and braked gently took the corner and felt a slight pulsing in the brake so i will get a wheel alignment tomorrow (as it needs one anyway) and look into some new or slotted rotars...

*edit just checked that site they seem reall cheap might ring them up.

Ok Dad reakon it is the bearing possibly..

It is Booked in for a
$14 28 Point Inspection. (should find that rear end drama thinking control arm bushes)
$?? Tighten Wheel Bearings.
$40 Wheel Alignment .
$?? Wheel Rotation.

Well I got the Wheel Alignment at Pedders Dubbo/Frank Cross Tyres,,
they tell me that they couldn't get the aligment 100% because I need a Castor/Camber Kit 359 ish Dollars....

They said bearings were fine, never rotated the wheels as they are to bald. Rear end bushings etc seem to be in good order. I drove it home to have lunch 60km limit. Seems no Dramas with steering......... UNTIL I drove it back to work 60km / 90km / 80km...

The Steering Wobble is f**k worse,,, before it was a minut wobble in the wheel. NOW it the whole f**k wheel wobbles when braking...

I got no idea...

yeah it must be warped rotors hey... but the thing is i don't feel it at all in the pedal..

also wouldn't the '28 point' inspection pick up dodgey steering rack?

Could a dodgey balanced tyre make these steering wheel wobbles.

I once found that getting steering alignment done made the shuddering worse (mind you, it was on a front wheel drive Ford Lazer wagon...)

Whatever - I also once found that I got shuddering after a balance and wheel alignment where as before that I didn't have any shuddering at all!

Go figure. I, personally, would have expected the opposite, but there you have it. Far be it from me to defy the practical application of some odd physics law Newton would have been proud of.


Machine the disks, or get new ones. And what was all that about needing all that other stuff? Sheeeez - Ask those guys how many old Fords they've fixed!

Well it is weird... the shakes/shudders have sub sided?.....

but honestly should i get this chamber caster kit done...

My cars simply have metal spacers to adjust the camber and castor. I took the ones off the wreck and put some of them on the good car. These would be cheap and reliable. A wheel aligner would prefer something much quicker and easier to adjust, but as long as they don't charge you more it's nothing to you. If you want to learn about the condition of everything related to the wheel alignment it pays to let them know beforehand. They will often think 'this is an old car, i just have to keep it going', and will only at best tell you about anything drastic.

Surely if the discs are warped the steering would only shudder under braking, unless they are dragging, in which case you could check for that by checking for heat buildup?

maybe it's the road in that area? There is a road going down a hill I frequently traverse and braking going down makes my car shudder heaps. Nowhere else similar to this road I drive does it.

I haven't posted before, so I hope I don't repeat what someone else has said.

I have a 97 EL Futura Classic, and the steering wheel was shuddering from side to side when I braked going down hill, or from speeds higher that about 40kms.

Among heaps of other work I had done, I had the rotors on the front replaced and the bearings regreased and repacked, and there is no shudder now.

I found that the wheel alignment I had made the shuddering worse, and I was told to get a camber kit too. I have not yet got the kit, I figured replacing my distributor, alternator, extension housing bearing, pressure solinoid in the gear box, dash lights, tail pipe and rear muffler was enough to try to recover from.

I would suggest having a look at the rotors, mine were not warped, just really worn down from the previous owners enthusiastic driving.

Froudey,
It would help a lot to put decent tyres on the car, bald tyres, especially those with uneven wear go 'out of round' and cause shudders.
No amount of d**k around with other things will solve the problem while your running on dud rubber.
They should have told you that at Pedders.
