Inspired by the tailshaft loop topic, I'm curious if anybody has had a tailshaft break, where it broke and what the results were....

i broke a tailshaft in my race car. ripped a hole through the floor and just missed battery cables and air lines. when the rebuild is finished it will have a loop fitted to stop this.

Get in touch with XR8Chic. Her tailshaft let go on the dyno, did a considerable amount of damage to the fuel lines.

XR8Chic had some pictures showing the damage. Scary stuff

Depends on were it comes apart. I have seen what was left of a FC wagon that broke the front uni speared into the road tearing the car apart killing 4 young guys on the Bell Line Of Road.

A freind tail sharft broke at the diff and tore the floor out of his HQ stuffed his gear box but the car was fixable.

My old WB panno let a tailshaft go leaving the lights....front yoke spread and dropped the shaft onto the handbrake cable. Tell ya what I was bloody glad it was there!

The driveshaft let rip in my brothers EA farimont earlier this year, he was doing about 140kph at the time.

Fortunatly it broke in the UJ at the diff end. The shaft hit the road numerous times and pretty much flattened out the floor in front of the back seat before it folded in to a U shape as it exited.

The gearbox had split in two, (his fairmont had been converted to manual) bits of the front UJ came up through the hole for the gearstick tearing all the rubber bellows out of the centre console the fuellines, handbrake cable and exhaust were all ok.

My brother had to have a couple stiches in his hand as it he had it resting on the gear knob at the time but he was bloody lucky really.

there was an XD ute at the drags here last year, it broke a shaft on the burn out pad. shaft broke at diff end then broke in half, a piece of the shaft came out from under the car and hit a guy in the legs. knocked him to the ground pretty fast.

You could put a flat peice under the arch/tunnel that the shaft runs through I guess.

Depends how its placed, but a loop would be better. Due to the nature of it spinning around, its better for it to be sitting at the bottom of the loop in the centre, rather than shifting to the side. That way, the uni joint wont be making nice little O shaped holes every where
