Thanks guys. I was hoping to get away with not having to do it but as you have said better to be safe then sorry. So do I just take it to a panel beater or the place where I will be getting it lowered? I am guessing a panel beater / crash repairer would be the better option.

lot of tire/wheel places will do it, but then a panel beater prob a better way to go, thats what im doing anyway

ive got au rims with adapters on my ef wagon and grabbed the guard first time i hit a bumb the funny thing is i put the silverstone tyres off the front on the back and bought the yokohamas up to the front no there isnt an issue both of them are 235/45/17 both have rim protectors but when i had them off the silverstone are a good 1/2" wider and a bit taller but why i had the wheels off i gave the guard a bit of tap up so thats why some people are saying no problems and other are hitting

I had EL GT copies (only 8" wide), and had to roll the guards, AND be very careful as I had rubbing on the whiteline sway bar (whiteline super low kit).

EL GT's had a different steering rack to prevent the wheels turning as much (they had a worse turning circle).

Being original GT's, they will grab the front guard the best. The extra .5" seems to be on the dish...

But you can roll your guards at home. Its easy.

Get a decent piece of wood you can hold in your hand. Preferably something strong like hardwood. Wrap it in a towel. Find a rubber mallet.

Take the front wheel off. Hold the covered wood to the outside of the guard. Take the mallet and start hitting the lip of the guard where the wood is. It will bend in. You need to hold the wood firm to keep the guard from stretching and/or craking the paint.

I watched a friend do both guards in about 20 min in my driveway. If you do it slowly, you wont have a problem.

hmm, I have 18's on pedders sports riders.. now im stressing out reading this!
Does anyone have an estimated price of how much they'll charge to roll your guards?
I am wanting to get ultra lows fitted soon so yeh.

As said it can be done yourself easily. Or places with rolling machines do it quickly, btu it costs something.

I think I would rather pay someone to do it. If they stuff the guard they can fix it.

The only thing i think with getting someone else to do it, is that they most likely still wont cover anything that happens to your paintwork on the guard.
A lot of tyre and suspension places will roll the guards, or almost any panel beater/smash repair place will.
I think in general the going rate is around $50 a guard, and you wont need the rears done. 10" wide rims fit no dramas.

i discovered my guards are rolled today, but they look like a home job, im not sure though...
somone got a pic of a "proffessionally" rolled guard?

You will find sometimes that guards become "self rolled" just by the wheels hitting them as you drive.

Depends on how low the car is and how wide the rim is.

easy enough to roll your own guards.... all you need are 2 people, a length of pipe and some patience..

one person drives the car (backwards and forwards)

one person with pipe, places pipe between wheel and guard. while other person drives backwards and forwards slowly, pipe is gradually lowerd (places more force on guard) to gradually roll the lip of the guard to desired level.

this requires alot of patience but if done correctly will be done with professional results.

do not try and rush things... only put slight pressure on each forward backward motion to gradually bend & roll guard. too much force can bend your guard requiring expensive repairs

A mate of mine has an NL Fairlane Concorde that has the same rims as a ELGT only a different colour, and he had to get the guards rolled with the lowered springs, they are already lower than a std NL Fairlane.

Funnily enough I know a Concorde owner with GT rims too. Same problems. The guards just weren't designed with wide rubber and lowered springs in mind - what were those engineers at Ford thinking.

Was the EL GT steering an different to the standard EL's?

I am planning on putting on some genuine EL GT's on my Fairmont Ghia with the correct size rubber 245/40/17 but probably onlyt lowering it with Low springs to bring it down to around the Tickford height. I wouldn't need to roll the guards then would I?
