I was looking around and have noticed that the AU Fairlanes are getting quite cheap now days. I have always like the look of them and Im starting to consider trading up. Only problem is that I REALLY dont want an automatic.... enter conversion idea but where to start. I searched the forums and turned up nothing. So....
Can it be done? Is it going to be too expensive? Will ECU, Tailshaft, finding a box cause me head aches? Any other head aches? What will i need? What kind of work is involved? Im willing to have the i6 or the V8 but if one is easier than the other that could be the decider. I hoping it will be very similar to converting a normal falcon. I would like to also do most of the work myself. |

The 6 will be cheaper to do a conversion on, simply because the boxes are cheaper and more readily available second hand.
A V8 Manual Fairlane would be pretty awesome though! |

I'm assuming a T5 will bolt up without any issues. Alot of guys do manual conversions in other models without changing the tailshaft, it should be a similar experience on the AU Lane.
As for ECU, if the auto ECU causes problems, move to an AU XR8 Manual ECU. As Private9 said, V8 T5's are a little harder to come by and hence more expensive - otherwise it looks like a goer! The thought crossed my mind to convert my AU LTD to manual, but I'm enjoying my fauto .. so lazy!

For a 6 you'd need an AU XR6 VCT ecu because of the VCT engines in fairlanes. And also i'd say a manual ute tailshaft. I wonder if the fairlanes have all the right holes in the floor for the pedal box, clutch cable etc..?

Also how would the traction control system be effected?

the trick i think would be finding an AU Ute or wagon with a VCT and manual etc ECU
its the same as any other AU manual conversion they just have the stupidly long tail shaft and weigh a heap more! you will also need a manual style center console (standard AU item will be fine) they already have the clutch hole(mine has a 4g power cable in it currently hehe) they are just different in the rear seat area nothing more good luck mate! |

i went from an NA lane to an AU lane
the AU handles AWESOME compared to the NA but the standard suspension and wheel and tyre combo is VERY soft and smooth riding but no good for driving fast around corners (remembering they ARE a grandpa car!! i have Superlow kings and Boge short shocks in the front with standard travel Boge shocks in the rear(none of the cheaper shock companys make a short travel shock for IRS AUs except Koni etc) i think i need an up rated sway bar as well to help keep the front from understeering under acceleration through corners etc the AU1 also has smaller brakes(same as EL brakes) compard to the twin piston AU2 items!! you will love the fact you can pull up next to a lexus and feel as sophisticated as them |
