I have recently acquired a mint Series 1 AU Ghia with 104000k .
It is a 1 owner car that has been serviced and maintained by one Ford dealer. The problem I have is that when braking lightly,there is some horrid front brake squeal. At first,I thought that it may need pad replacement as there is also a very slight grinding from the right front,but when I removed a front wheel,The pads look to be as new. Any ideas as to how this squeal can be stopped. Also,is there any benefits to removing the dust shields from the factory rims. The car is a 4.0 VCT,4speed auto. thanks in advance. |

Glazed pads.
Remove them and run them back and forth across some concrete and refit them.

Finally got the poos with my brake squeal today and bought a set of bendix ceramic pads and a can of CRC anti Squeal.
Pulled the old pads to find that the outer RH pad felt really grainy and the rotor was finely scored.\I removed the rotors,cleaned them with carby cleaner,sprayed them and the slides with anti squeal,lubed the caliper slides and refitted everything. Took it for a good run to bed in the pads ,then a bit of a squirt and they are now as quite as a mouse.(for now). Thanks for the input guys. |

Cheap pads squeal like cheap hookers, and you can take that to the bank.

Is it advisable to remove the dust shields from the rims to let more air into the brakes?
If so,what is the best way to go about it? |

they can be removed without issue, the only down side is you will get a bit of dust on the outside of the rims, i used a large scewdrive and punched them in from the outside, mine broke into many pieces but i wasnt going to re use them....

The dust shields tend to get surface rust and can look quite s**t as well. Look better without them.

If the pads are almost new and the rotors weren't machined prior to fitting the pads, then you will need to remove the pads ( if you don't want to machine the rotors ) and put a champher on the inner and outer edges of the friction material. This will alleviate the grinding noise....if this is the case. Make sure the wear shims are adhered to the stub axle assembly, using Grey Maxx silicone, and they are aligned/fitted in the correct orientation, and make sure the caliper slides are lubed ( oil free synthetic grease) and free to move with no busted slide boots. Wouldn't hurt to change the brake fluid either. As for the plastic dust sheilds on the rims....they are really, really hard plastic....very tough to break. They do make a creaking noise at low speed, like when your looking for a parking spot in a shopping centre....you can hear them when you are near a wall. I had to glue them to the rim all around the outer edge with Sikaflex...this stopped the creaking noise.
