Don`t think model will actually matter, its that i have an AU3 with live axle and planning on putting XR6 height springs and shocks in,because they`re due to be replaced.

They had both, XR6 VCT had IRS, XR6 HP had Live axle.

Springs are very different as stated.

Rear springs interchange from EA through to AU3 Live Axle.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Tickford Suspension = IRS. VCT = IRS. Fairmont Ghia/XR8/Fairlane = IRS

Although to add more confusion, I think you could also get Tickford suspension with live axle (like standard series 1 xr6's and falcon 's') as an option on sedans as well.

And Troyman, I had no idea it as an option until I went to look at this car (assuming it was live axle). What a surprise it was!

Yeah, I have a feeling the IRS was independent of whether you had a tickford suspension set up as I think that you could get IRS on a normal height falcon (although someone may want to confirm/deny this?)

I have a tickford plate for the bodykit, but IRS and LSD aren't listed. Tickford suspension isn't on the plate either but I am guessing this is because S's came with it as standard fitment?

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I figured this would be better the starting a new one..

I'm going to start looking at a few AU 2/3 XR6s this week and wanted peoples thoughts on whether its worth getting one with the IRS rear end?

Theres a particular AU XR6 HP that I'm quite keen on but if the IRS is worth it I'll wait around until I can find a decent one.

I'm basically wanting to know whether theres much difference in terms of handling etc between the IRS rear and the NON IRS rear end.

Cheers,
Luke

IRS seems to give much better turn-in, smoother ride, and handles bumps better. It doesn't tend to skip sideways as readily if you hit a bump mid-corner. It also gives better traction if you are giving it heaps of boot going through a turn - eg, turning out of a driveway or side road.

I wouldn't say that the absolute cornering limits are any higher than with a live axle. And, in theory, IRS has more wear points (bushes, etc), so should develop play sooner than a live axle would. But my 2001 AU2 XR6 VCT with IRS has no suspension slop at 250,000kms+, so maybe that's not an issue in actual use.

I believe the common AU issue of top shock mounts collapsing affects both IRS and live axle equally, but I could be wrong.

I love the IRS, and would much rather have it than not.

Cheers that's the response I was looking for, an actual owners opinion!

I might try and test drive both to make my decision...

The extra bushing and extra weight is what would turn me off an IRS model but if as you're saying they're a more comfortable ride and handle a bit better I may be persuaded.

Dons Ghia is IRS. Its certainly not as waggy in the tail on a set of bends as a live axle car.
It is more composed. Personally I don't really like it.
Im used to driving a car that will happily oversteer. That's how I learnt to drive.
Dons car handles like its on rails and rides really nice. Myself I get bored driving it as it is so comfortable and does everything so well.

Irs definitely takes the boat feel out of the Falcons.they definitely drive much nicer provided everything is tight and unworn

Another thing which is good abut IRS is the tailshaft doesn't smash into the floor!
