Can anyone tell me how much it cost to get an 4 speed auto gear box out of an XH (EF/EL) reconditioned, and how long it would take? I guessing that most places would probably do exchange deals?
While you have your thinking caps on I need the same advice for a steering rack? Any info would be appreciated. |

It depends on how busy the workshop is.
However, with one person working on only your box, it can be done in a day depending on how busy the shop is or how streamlined they operate, could take longer. I worked for a few days doing a mini computer network install in an auto box reconditioning shop and saw it done. Lets say I've never seen that many custom tools for any other automotive trade! Cost. I'd imagine its the same box as the EB2>EL box. Could be wrong though. Imagine $1700-$2500 depending on internal damage and how good they do the job and whether or not they're ripoff or good value. Steering rack? NFI. |

I've had a good look at the tie rod ends etc and the coupling is the steering shaft and all appears to be OK. When I move the wheel slightly from side to side, just applying some load I hear a 'knocking' noise coming from the steering. Given I have inspected the other areas I am suggesting, as are two steering machanics, that the rack needs to be replaced. I may well be wrong, but if you have any other ideas I'm open to suggestions. |

well, for the rack you could be looking at $390 + (installed + alignment) and i dont think tie rod ends are in that price (my cars going in tuesday for a new rack).
gearbox 2000-2500 is my guess

hey cds70 I bought a reconditioned steering pump for 150 and a reco rack for 250 - fitted myself - but my steering was leaking pretty badly and i had to use so much force to steer i collapsed the bearing in the firewall.
The noise might be a common thing with falcons... just go to a few car dealers with falcons from ea to au, they pretty much all do the slight click from side to side (when the engine is off) but if it is worse than what other cars are doing it might need some attention needed paying to it.. if it aint broke... good luck with the gearbox by the way

Reason I aaked how you knew is i got a weird noise which comes n goes, not clicking or knocking, more a groaning noise - was told it might be something to do with steering/rack/pump/etc. yet got no idea where to take it in SE melb to have it looked at.

There are about a dozen different clunk/click/groans falcons tend to make through the steering (good luck isolating the problems)

Is the sound similar to what happens when you try and move the steering when the wheels aren't moving or when you hold it at full lock (both times when the pump is under considerable load)? If it comes and goes it could be just as simple as an intermittant blockage requiring only a flush to fix. Worst case, you may be looking at a rooted pump.

With the transmission, just get a second hand unit. I gave my old 4-speed auto away lol.

what's to say that the same thing wont happen to the second hand gearbox if it hasnt been rebuilt before though?....ive got 3 mates who own EB-ED and each of them has replaced their gearbox at about 200,000 k'z because the tranny dies on its a*** allowing it to shift into only 2 gears (similar to limp mode). And 2 of them have now got their second tranny rebuilt instead of finding another second hand one which is more than likely going to die again.
Mines had this problem for about 6 months now, cars been driven with 1st and 3rd for a while now im just waiting for the mechanic to come back from overseas who has a rebuilt tranny ready to be put in |
