Hi Guys,
My auto gear lever is really lose. Whats the easiest way to adjust it? Can this be done from in the car or do you have to get under the car? It's an XH ute so I figure that its similar to EB/D's as well. Any help is appreciated.

HI Mate
Is it loose front to back or side to side? If front to back it is the bush the selector rod connects to the transmission itself. If it is side to side, it is the bushes in the actual gear leaver selector, and bushes are available from Ford, two for under 10 bucks. For the side to side, which I suspect is the issue, you need a 17mm open end spanner, car stand, trolley jack and some patience. Basically, you need to remove the gear position cover and then at the bottom of the gear lever stem you will see a 17mm nut. The shaft this nut is on is where the bushes need to be wrapped around. One on the end the nut is on, and one at the other end under the car. Good luck BenJ

Cheers for that. It's loose front to back and side to side. More side to side though. Will I need to get under the car? Is it easy to check what I will need before I go and buy the parts or am I best of just buying both bushes and then replacing them both?

easier from under the car, $40 for bushes, got mine done during an auto service, now is stiff as! your gearbox technician can easily do this for you during a service.

Yes, you will need to get under the car to put in the bush on the selector side. If you describe the problem to the parts guy, and give him the model ect, then they should know what part you need. Cheers BenJ

Spoke to Fraud $3.26 each and need two of them. Will probably do myself just don't like getting that far under the car when its on chassis stands and a jack etc.

Well I've put the car up on stands and now I'm confused as to why. I seem to be able to access both bush locations on the selector bottom bolt. I removed the centre console, the shifter surround and the brass mounting plate that bolts to the tunnel. I can now lift the assembly up gently to get to both ends of the bolt. Thats all well and good except I can't get the shifter off the bolt at the bottom - its a very snug fit. Anyone know how I can get this off? I've tried prying it off with a flat head to no avail.
Thanks for the help guys

Hi mate,
I had to wiggle it quite hard to get the shifter stem off. It will require some patience and force. Cheers BenJ

Yeah ended up using vice grips as they have a taper. Forcing that between the shifter stem and the plate housing helped it off. Would have to be the most satisfying repair i've done lol. Makes it feel like new! I found that the while job could be done from inside the car. first remove the shifter surround, then the centre console and then the brass plate and you can pull it all through the tunnel.
Thanks for all the help guys another annoying problem fixed!

Bit of a grave dig...but had the same issue with my XH XR8 ute.
Couldn't buy any XH bushes for the trans lever, couple of eBay sellers said the early model bushes won't fit or work. I went to Rare Spares and they had none either, so I bought a bush kit to suit XT through to ZG models, they are the black ones. I just followed the instructions above and found my shifter had no bushes whatsoever...no wonder it had heaps of sideways movement. The bushes I bought fitted perfectly so some sellers don't know what they are talking about. Bloody rapt I am...best job i've done today and only took an hour. |
