What is the diferences between the models from the first BTR 4 speed up til the AU BTR...... i can't score a normal EB 3.9 auto in dubbo but there is plenty of ef and au ones so could some one explain the differences...

Get an ef one, it still has a dipstick.
au ones dont have dipsticks. they should go in without any problems at all.. hey I am using a manual 88 model EA wagon 5 speed box in my EF.... 94 model. I have heard lots of things about small differences in power handling, but this is yet to be seen as they all appear to be able to take a fair bit of abuse so long as the heat doesn't get to them. later generally would be the better transmission, however having no dipstick would be a pain in the bum ef series 2 onwards they deleted the stick.

yeah i think they were. i had to butcher some of the wiring harnesses from my ef auto loom to hook into the manual loom, and the plugs were the same in my box as some of the other ones i have seen.
I would think they are the same, but just for your peace of mind, poke your head under your car and if it has 1 square plug with 4 wires on it hooked onto the transmission position sensor 1 round plug with something like 7 wires in it (guessing on the wire amount) controls the gearboxes solenoids and the temp sender to the pcm then they are the same..

AU BTR is by far the best. Anyone who has driven an AU will know what i am talking about.
EA-ED are the same. EF and EL marginally better. I have heard stories about the EA-ED box being a bit stronger. Don't quote me on that though

they are all the same basic box but there were quite a few internal changes that were made with each model. I have the factory BTR manual if you are really interested but it is a boring read.
Most of the difference you feel is the electronic tuning side of things. While AU's might "feel" better, put an EA box in and connect it to the AU computer and it will feel the same.

They have different solenoids, and the extension housing is different too.

the extention housing is the same dude. i have changed the extention housing on my ef over with an ea one, and put an xf tailshaft in the ea.
the diff where the tailshaft bolts onto it is different after the eb series 1 but the tailshaft yolke will fit into the back of all of those gearboxes. hence the fact I am running an EA T5 in my ef with the original ef tailshaft.

I think I have an extention housing from the earlier models in the garage somewhere. did you want to post a pic of the au one up in here and if I can find mine, then same thing.
do you know if the yolke on the au tailshaft is the same as the earlier btr gearboxes?
