i'm not sure where to put this, so here it is.
I am looking at an old (89) skyline that a friend is thinking of buying it and it has a problem with the auto box. Apparently it was driving okay and then nothing. No noises, bangs or bits fallen off, just no gears. I had a look and it definitely doesn't select any gears forward or reverse. i checked the auto oil and it is clean and at the correct level.
My mate doesn't have a lot of money to fix the car if he buys it and i was hoping someone might have an idea what could be the problem.

Anywho...when you pull down on the lever to select your gear...does it feel loose or normal?

If it feels loose, the selector may have decoupled from the actual transmission lever...assuming the shifter is similar to Fords and is mechanically selected (not sure if there are such things as electronic selectors are there?).

Have a look under the car and see if the gear selector on the box is connected to the gear leaver mechanism.

shifter all feels like it is selecting correctly, you can feel it "clicking" into each gear position. I am pretty sure they are a rod or cable like falcons.

If you pull the auto tranny pan off, you may find some plastic in there, from bushings. So the endfloat is gone and so is the oil pressure to make it work. Same looking auto tranny as the VL commo's....a Jatco??? i think they call them.

Someone hasn't stolen the tailshaft have they? LOLOL

Seriously though, they are a rather simple gearbox, and cheap to replace. And honestly them being that simple, and the symptoms it has, its got me stuffed, because generally if the shifter is connected, and they even have a drab of oil in them, they'll go.

Only thing i can think of, is have you checked the fluid level correctly? Maybe try putting a little more in it and see what happens. I've had a couple of old school autos boxes before that did infact read on the stick, but it wasn't enough.

The model you are talking about is the R31 skyline, seeing as though its an 89 model its a late s3 and such will require a S3 auto, your best bet for any/all of the info you'd be looking for would be on
