HI all,

I recently had my T5 rebuilt in my XR8. The blokes who installed it put Castrol VMX80 manual gear oil into it. However, on the docket from the rebuilder he said "please use Castrol Transmax Z in this gearbox" (which is a synthetic automatic tranny oil). I assume that it wasn't any sort of misprint.
If i should use transmax Z, will it make a difference after having had VMX80 in there cos when i drain it there will be no way of getting all the old oil out. Can anyone help?? Thanks

If you replace the oil, the amount left will be so diluted it wont matter.

Before you replace it though, make sure you are goign to use the right oil, dead gearbox costs too much.

The guy who rebuilt it is Mal Wood (most people say he's pretty good so i assume he knows which oil to use). The people who actually installed it (i had it couriered to brissie) were the ones who put VMX80 in there. I think they may have been too tight to put the synthetic in there !!

transmax Z is what you should use in t 5's as the syncros will love you for it , they have been using light gear oil and dextron 3 for years in those gearbox's for cold / hot shifting . Transmax Z is my choice .

Those guys have just put in what the workshop manual specifies for std V8 manual box - slack pricks should have read that docket.

I'd suggest calling Mal Wood and seeing what he says about it - ie. whether he reckons you'll be right with that VMX80 (ie. I suspect the issues will be how it feels and how the box will wear) - or whether it's viable to drain as much of that stuff out and refill with Transmax even with some residual.

How much did the re-build cost? After an accidental (well kinda) reverse burnout my T5 now makes crunchy noises in reverse. Gears 1-3 whine a bit too. But Syncros are ok.

It was an exchange box. I gave him my f**k box (and it was absolutely f**k) and $2000. The reverse in the T5's is very weak, mine had broken off almost all the teeth of the reverse gear, the case hardening on others was wearing through, my syncros were rooted, seals stuffed, bearings noisy and much more. I suggest you take action before too much else goes wrong cos you may not need to get an exchange yet - you may only need a few things done to get it up to scratch.
