Hi Im havin probs with my 4 speed auto
Cruising along nicely at about 100 kph---all of a subben it wanted to drop back a gear (well thats what it seemed like it was doing)---seemed to change gears with a jerk--I slowed down to about 70-80- kph for about 10 ks and then it seemed fine when I increased to 100kph.About 500 kms later it done exactly the same thing. Anyone got any ideas on what it coud be and how to fix it? Last edited by Blue EL on Fri Jul 02, 2010 4:12 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

the tranny may be in need of a service. Is the oil level ok. Possibly the tranny got a bit hot with such a long drive too.

Sounds like a neutral safety switch. Got mine done for 200 with a service. Depending on how handy you are you might be able to do yourself.

Oil has just been changed, but it done it the second time after the oil change. There was nothing unusual in the filter or pan although the oil was quite dirty. Is there any adjustments?--ie bands or any thing---think I remember someone telling me theres not.
Finnigan001---Do you mean the neutral starting switch ?---The one that lets ya start it in park or neutral? Its played up a few times---had to bang it into park a few times to get it going. |

I'd say it's the same thing. Some call it start inhibitor switch. It's on the side of the transmission as far as I know. When mine was doing the same thing as yours I rang up a couple tranny places including ford and they all said the same thing. Must be a pretty common thing.

Yep, sounds like the gear position switch...on the left side of the tranny.
The seal that seals the 2 halves together perishes and lets moisture in, buggers the contacts, and you have a gearshift problem. It can be difficult to remove, as they rust onto the shaft. They used to be about $70 from Ford.

Is it that simple? Gees what happened to the simple inhibitor switch not alowing to start. Mines doing that jumps from 4th to 2nd at 100-110 I thought great auto clutch pack rebuild seeing as the fluid runs through that before the valve body. But now you said the seal perishes and lets moisture in makes sence it started after an extremely wet road trip. Cheers guys you've saved me some $$ although I'm rebuildin one atm but wasnt in a rush till this happened :s

Watching the dash at 100kmph is would fly all over the place, back to 2nd, then into park then into reverse. (it didn't actually activate these two to protect itself). When it wasn't doing this it would simply just stay in 3rd gear (when the ECU wasn't getting a signal from the unit).
