Here's a question
Which gearbox would last longer in terms of durability and life? Providing that both are used equally. Automatic Transmission or Manual Transmission? or, which one would require more maintenance? |

i daresay, when treated properly, an auto box will be the more durable of the 2.

I have my original auto and it has done 245,000 and runs awesome still. Im pretty sure the shiftkit has saved it though.

My 2001 AU had 407,000+ kays on it with the original auto box. It only ever had services on it, the logs said only filter and oil changes.
It changed into first a bit hard and took 1-2 seconds to engage reverse. Other than that it ran just fine.

i would say auto, and i say this because in my opinion, a worked auto is a s**t better, stronger and more fun than a dirty old t5!

id say the auto would be stronger, only cause my mate has an xg ute and he holds it on limit and smashes it into gear all the time and its still working good.

This is a tuff decision, yes autos will hold up if driven in a sensible matter. But a manual would be cheaper and ezier to repair, a clutch is alot eazier to replace then a new auto box. Also who doesnt love shifting, churping and drifting with a manual
 . But if you wanted something to lay down a good quarter mile time an auto will always come on top. It all depends what your car is going to be mainly used for: Peek hour traffic driving ,drags, some big line locky burnouts = auto. Churpies, drift, quick response from the engine = manual.This is just my opinion, regards Jared.

i agree with smithykicks85.
but the auto will take more power then the manual. i like my auto but the 2 sec delay on kickdown does suck |

I forgot to mention iv owned a few falcons all autos all of them over a 6 year period. My last manual was my first car, 1990 Navara 4cyl 4 speed coloum manual. Over the time of owning my falcon 4 speed autos, iv always missed my manual. I now own a ML triton 4cyl RWD 5 speed manual and its a pleasure driving a single cab alloy tray in the wet
 But it comes down to personal preferece. Cheers

Has only ever had the normal servicing and has been driven pretty hard for the last 50,000kms/4years, now has 261,000km on it and works perfectly. Holds gears when I want it to(rarely), no delay in engaging gears, smooth shifts e.t.c.

i would say a manual has the ability to out last an auto..
i think the problem is that most people drive a manual harder than an auto.. i just added up all the kms from the 3 cars my t5 has been in and its just under 400.000km. the last 100,000+ it has been abused a bit,and the gearbox is still ok. its far from being new it does have a slight input bearing rattle in neutral but still shifs nice and doesnt crunch.. i think both auto and manual have the ability to last a hell of a long time but it all comes down to servicing and how it is treated!! |
