At the moment my trannys got the metal lines going from it to near the radiator, then runs rubber tranny fluid lines to what looks like a factory fitted auto tranny radiator, sits infront of the coolant radiator on what looks like factory brackets. Anyways, my coolant radiator is pretty new, an the tranny cooler that's build into the drivers side of it has never been hooked up (may have on previous radiator but they never did to this one). Was thinking of running the tranny fluid first through the built in radiator then into the external one, then back to the box, reason being for this order is that I think the external radiator prolly has the potential to cool the fluid to the lowest temperature of the two (as the built in radiator is connected/sitting next to very hot coolant). Reason for running through both coolers is: a. couse I can and b. shoudln't do it anyharm and the tranny fluid will probably like to be as cool as posiable.
Few questions, firstly will the pump on the tranny be strong enough to pump the fluid through both radiators? 2nd, which of the lines coming out of the tranny is the return line and which is the pumped line? Should the fluid enter or leave the factory built in radiator at the top or bottom? And should the fluid enter or leave the aftermark tranny fluid radiator at the top or bottom?

well, it runs though both from factory where fitted.

Excellent, so any ideas as to weather it goes in at the top and comes out the bottom or goes in at the bottom and comes out at the top?

I think its in the bottom of the radiator, out of the top to the external cooler, then out of the external cooler to the pipe that was cut, which goes back to the trans.

I can verify when I go to lunch. I'll have a look under my bonnet.

Thanks. Any idea if it should go in at the top of the external cooler or in at the bottom? I assume in at the top as then when it's cool it goes down, as hot stuff rises.
And any idea which outlet on the tranny is the return and which is the pump (both my lines have been cut already).

It most definately goes through the bottom and up though the top radiator connection as i unhooked the top 1 started the engine and saw it pumping out and all over my engine bay. wasnt the smartest thing to do but i just had to know and see it with my own eyes.

the tranny pump will cope just fine with external coolers as ive got 2 craig davies coolers hooked up and after going though the second cooler fluid is ice cold. (not really but u know what i mean) :lol:


hook it up to come out of the top of the radiator and into the external cooler.
think its a 3/8 inch connection

1. its flowing from the lower tranny line to the radiator core and out the top, then into the top of the 2 tranny coolers connected in series. Then goes back to the return tranny cooler(top)

2. Not sure which flow for each line at the tranny,
a little line tracing never went astray.

Just start with Bottom radiator line, that is the *pumped* line and trace it back to the tranny good luck with it all.

dont forget to buy thread sealant as trany fluid is $$$

Original factory routing is:
No auxiliary cooler:
Rear (upper) line from auto goes to top radiator connection (inlet) - bottom radiator connection goes to forward (lower) line on auto (return).
With auxiliary cooler:
Rear (upper) line from auto goes to top auxiliary cooler connection (inlet), bottom auxiliary cooler connection goes to top radiator connection, bottom radiator connection goes to forward (lower) line on auto (return).

You don't want to feed the cooler from the bottom as when you are low on fluid your box level will drop until enough fluid has pumped through lines to raise to the top line to return to the box. You will also be putting more pressure on the pump as it has to fight gravity to raise the fluid.

u know i never thought of the gravity issue. just left mine stock and added the external coolers due the previous tranny overheating.

Why would ford choose to pump the tranny fluid up through the radiator and not down like coolant?

the engines water pump is on the bottom radiator hose remember.

i'v got to get ahold of somee fiittings to go into the built in radiator tranny coolers now so I can run the lines to it.
