Does "economy" mode on an AU Fairmont/Falcon actually reduce the heat through the transmission system?
Or does it increase the heat through the transmission system? On page 16 of the owner's manual it reads: "The ECON light illuminates when the automatic transmission economy mode has been selected. If the indicator flashes, the automatic transmission oil is overheated." however this sentence doesn't really answer the question i asked above. basically i'm trying to avoid overheating of my transmission oil as i am currently having some problems with it. so i'm not sure whether i should run the car in ECON or Normal mode to reduce heat in the trans oil. is there anyone smart enough to know the answer cause i'm a dumb a**

Im not sure but I dont think non-adaptive shift autos change the actual firmness of the shift differently depending which mode. A soft slow gear change will cause more heat than a snap gear change.

No....
All economy does is change gears sooner and possibly in your case make the shift smoother and slower, to aid in economy, thus why it is called what it is It creates less heat in the box having a snap shift like from a shift kit or similar, the "surging" effect is what creates heat, a hard firm shift, will surge less, thus creating less heat You may be confusing economy mode with limp home mode, the latter will only let the car have 3rd gear should any damage or malfunction occur within the gearbox.

no it lets the car use the gears to max ouput.. say on eccom mode flat stick it will change gears around 4000rpm with it off change around 6000rpm..
like the old school power buttons on the 4cyclinders to help them up hills yeh what he said above

no, other way around, economy surging gear changes make more heat.

in my el around town i actually got better economy with the power button on. but in the bf its better in normal

Economy mode shift the gears earlier in the rev range. Power is for towing, shifts the gears higher up the rev range......that is it. If you tow a box trailer with a dirty big wardrobe in it at 100kmh, with out a tranny cooler, for about 4 hrs, you will cook the auto......seen it happen....wasn't me.

If the indicator flashes, the automatic transmission oil is overheated." : Regardless if the econ is on or off, the ECON light will flash if it is overheated, umm, so if u have it in normal mode it will come on and if it is already on because you are in econ mode it will start blinking. I was told by having it on that the box will last longer for a EF/EL BTR???

I have been informed on the following:
apparently the ECON mode does two things - 1. It allows torque converter lock up in 3rd and 4th gears in the “drive” gear lever position. 2. On the 97LE transmission ECON mode also incorporates an anti flare mechanism. Tech Article here: http://www.fordforums.com.au/vbportal/m ... icle&id=36 does anyone have any opinion on this? they are saying that ECON mode will REDUCE trans temperature slightly, not increase it. |

Also, the box will last longer by driving it in town ( 60 kmh or slower ) by having it in 3rd...( 1.0:1).
You don't drive a manual around town in 5th......also saves the brakes a little too.

if driving slower makes the box last longer, then i would say ECON is definitely better to reduce overheating.

Thats great news then as most of my driving is 60kms but stop and start but i do know that when converters are locked that there is less heat with converter and box
