Hi all we are new to Fordmods we have a 1997 NL Fairlane V8 the automatic transmission seems to want to stall when the car is gearing down to a stop so you have to drop it into neutral and once you stop put it back into drive this only happens every so often can anyone advise what could be the issue cheers Kim and Shane.

you will probably find the base idle needs to be reset,
start by cleaning out the throttle body then disconnect the idle solenoid, and adjust the idle stop screw so it idles around 600 rpm, then reconnect the idle solenoid. |

Thanks for your reply but just another question does the transmission need to come out to do this or can it stay in the car regards Kim.

No the trans stays in place. The solution i suggested is to do with the engine , not the trans but very likely the issue you are having

BASE IDLE SPEED - 6 Cylinder
Check and Adjust The base Idle speed is factory set. Adjustment is not required and should not be attempted as a part of any normal vehicle service. 11 an idle speed irregularity is indicated during an EEC V 'Sell Test' (Code 411 or 412) the following check and adjustment procedure must be used. NOTE: This test must be conducted with spark timing static at TDC. The, EEC V system will only maintain TDC timing for approximately 2 minutes after the KOER test. 1. Conduct KOER self test and at the completion of the test, check ignition timing is at TDC. 2. Insert a 0.75 mm thick spacer (feeler gauge, etc.) between the throttle lever stop tab and the throttle stop adjusting screw on the throttle body. 3. Unplug the idle speed control solenoid. 4. Using an accurate tachometer, note the engine r.p.m. An engine speed reading of 700 r.p.m. ± 100 is acceptable. 11 outside this range, adjust to 700 r.p.m. ± 20 using the adjusting screw. |
