Hi all... can anyone out there without quessing tell me what should be done on a good transmission service. Do they Flush the oil, change the pan filter, adjust the bands or clutches and check the kickdown, is it all electronic or automattically adjusted??? and what oil should be used, is it a fancy dancy ford only oil or can you use a better aftermarket brand.
and is it normal for the trans not to select 4th untill above about 60kmh?
:? Cheers.

This tread came because I took my car to a "transmission specialist" shop, the guy came out to the car and said "hello what can i help you with", I said "im thinking about giving my tranny a birthday what do you know about these trannys". He said "I know everything", so I said "what should be done", he said "we flush the oil out and refil with ELF oil", i said "what about a filter", he said, "oh do you want a filter?" i said "your surpossed to be telling me what I need not the other way around", I then said "how about the kickdown adjustment, in D it wont go into 4th til about 65kms, i said i move it into manual tiptronic mode and select 4th at 50kms to lower the revs and better the fuel consumption". He then said "is this one a tiptronic?". I then turned around and walked out. hehehehe Idiot.

yeah, just flush the oil, change the pan filter/gaskit.

as for the shifting thing, these are electronic boxes, so an ecu reset might help, as they learn how you drive, reset and drive sedately and it will learn your shifting habits.

Very unlikely that bands will need adjusting
Fluid and filter should be replaced, maybe flush it if it is clunky but otherwise dont bother
There is no kickdown cable, gear selecting is controlled by the computer. If it wont select gears at the right time its probably a sensor issue (TPS)

It's normal for XT's to not change into fourth until >70km/h and I think n/a XR6's like yours. Ford themselves recomment a few different aftermarket transmission fluids in the owners manual. I put 20L's of Castol TQ95 through mine and it seems fine, and it's having to hold 270rwkw.

shes got a soft shift, even when in PERF mode.

Mine doesn't go to 4th till around ~75, which makes sence. There isnt much benifit changing at 50, your probably not actually saving any fuel as your increasing the load on the engine pretty significantly.

well she done 130kms now and I dont know the history. I dont have a dipstick so I cant check it. also the shifts are soft as I said before and the kickdown could be a little more responisive and it confuses its self. ill try a complete flush and a pan filter tomorrow and see how she goes.

there is a benefit in changing to top gear earlier. as said, and as i know as i also get annoyed by this problem, in perf mode it will go into 4th earlier than 70kph. if you are on a flat stretch of road compare the inst. fuel consumption in drive and in 4th in perf mode.

to say there is too much strain on the motor is just silly and is the line ford gave me when i whinged about it. maybe 20yrs ago but these days they are pumping out 383Nm of torque, a reasonable amount of which is developed fairly low down, so they should easily be able to handle 4th at 60kph. the fact that the majority of city roads have a speed limit of 50 or 60 and ford design the car to not use top gear until 70 just doesn't make sense.

Don't forget top gear is an overdrive and usually shifts after 65to 70KPH

got it serviced today.....
oil was a black as your avatar (heheheheheeeee)
nah man she was real dirty.
so we did a complete flush and a filter. using 20 litres of ELF LE oil is what it took to clean it out.
I dont notice any difference but for peace of mind I can only be doing it good, and now I know where my trans servicing stands.

It doesn't go to 4th till over 150km/hr in Perf(ormance) mode, this is confirmed in the manual. I do agree with you to a point though, as I always have my dash on inst. fuel consumtion I've played around and seen the difference.

So you think they set it to not change to 4th after 70km/hr for no reason?

Now I'm sorry but that's just ignorance, engineers have reasons for everything they do. They just don't pull the number out of a hat.

The thing that get me is that its a 4spd auto and we drive at 50 -60 kms around town, do we get 4th gear doing this? NO

You look at the rev counter at 55 and shes doing damn near 1800, thats the same at 100 in 4th with the torque convertor locked up.

Sure, it has 3 modes to select from, Drive, Perf and Manual.

So why the f@#! shouldnt we get 4th in Drive, the laziest mode available.
After all these poxy engines are the most economical 6's around.

If the reason was strain, they wouldn't have allowed us to select it manually.

I just think Ford F@#! up on this one.
