OK, we're underway.
The BA XR8 Front brakes are 298mm ventilated Rotors. The BF XR8 Front brakes are 322mm ventilated Rotors with different calipers (I've heard these come as a result of the Brake work done on the Territory) The BA XR8 Premium Brake package had 325mm front discs. So the BF discs work out to be quite a bargain. Anyway, FTG have a front brake upgrade kit (BA to BF) for $650, which includes RDA slotted rotors, Calipers, Brake Lines and Pads (See the FTG area of the forums for more details). I have the upgrade kit on my oily-shelf, and will be photo-journalling the cutover and posting it up here. My first two points of call are: (1) What solvent do you guys recommend for removing the storage-and-transport coating? And what's the best way of cleaning them up - bathing them in the stuff, or damp-ragging it away. (2) What brand/type of brake fluid is generally used by Ford Workshops? I'll obviously have to bleed-in the new lines and calipers, and want to use the same fluid where I can. The first set of Photo's should be up shortly with the bits fresh out of the shipping box.... Re: Brake Fluid
User Manual says Super Dot 4 brake fluid. Ford R1-39A is an example. Question is, should I go for the Ford fluid or just find any Super Dot 4? Recommendations anyone? Lukeyson |

they're about $6 a bottle reatail for brake fluid. The change is a piece of pie to do, we did trents BA turbo a while ago, but after u bleed the brakes the pedal might still feel spongy when at dead stop for a week or 2, same as any brand new car you get into.

Lukeyson Find any well known brand name Dot 4, it won't make any difference considering most dealerships use different brands of brake fluid as long as it conforms to original specs, it is the same with oils used at dealerships. If it is a warranty issue than more likely the dealership with use Ford branded products so they can claim it back from Ford, same thing happens with other manufacturers. Use any solvent which leaves no residue for cleaning the discs, guaranteed solvent would be brake cleaner, the name says it all.

Brake Cleaner Solvent? That's some sort of well known product at Supercheap Auto or something maybe?
Otherwise, how relevant are solvents like Turps, Methylated Spirits, Paint Thinners or Petrol? I think I'll get in this weekend and have a go at changing them over. Lukeyson |

Brake upgrade done.
Is there any need to do a How-To? I took a whole lot of shots. Here's a few of them:

Looks good! How do they compare to the old ones? I was looking at getting them but instead i decided on the PBR kit which is going on in a week

Early days. Still smoking a lot as I had to try and remove most of the 'shipping coating' using a solvent.... And a bit spongy on the pedal after going in. I suspect I probably do have to bleed some more.
I'm not doing any hard stops yet until they bed in for awhile, so I won't be able to offer you any bumometer braking comparisons yet. Lukeyson |

I'm starting to get brake shudder again so i'll be looking at getting something like that. A guide would still be helpful as I dont know all the little things like bleeding brakes properly etc. Last thing i'd want is brake fail.

While you can't see it in the picture above, the old rotors were pretty badly scored, and had already been machined 3 times at Ford while under warranty.
There wasn't much left of them! And the pads only had about 2-3mm left on them. So it was good timing. But I've got to say, the bleeding is the easy bit. The hard bit is getting enough leverage to undo the 2 main mounting bolts which seem to be lock-tite bonded from the factory, and getting the discs off the hub - after so may heat cycles the things had to be levered off with a bloody 1-metre bar! 2yo was crawling over my back and lap at the time, so there were a few tense moments....
