I've been having a few issues lately - I'll be driving along fine at 100km/h freeway speed, and then the steering will start vibrating - quite violently - about say 2-3cms of steering wheel movement each side. It starts going crazy!
So I slow down and pull over - check front wheels - nothing seems amiss. Get back in and go - no problems. It is weird how it is intermittent. I think my steering rack might be on the way out. It does it at different points in the journey too - so it is not a road surface thing, and the wheelnuts are all tight. I had the steering rack replaced about 27,000kms ago under warranty. The first rack did close to 100,000kms - and this rack has done almost 27,000mk. Any ideas? Suggestions? What's the parts warranty? 20,000kms I'm guessing Cheers

Yeah - don't think it is tyres - never had this problem with them before.
It's odd to be sure....

are there any dints in the rim inside and outside or dirt on them as this can also do the same thing

No - rims are pretty good except for minor gutter rash.
They are clean too - and I suspect it would take a LOT of dirt to make them unbalanced like this! Incidentally it has not done it since I first posted about 500kms ago.....

Sounds like wheel balance issue. The fact that it's gone away suggests there was a lump of something stuck on that has since dislodged? My work ute is doing it right now, 80-90kms hour feels un driveable, speed up or slow down from those speeds and is all good. I know its mud, just cbf's cleaning it, haha.
Otherwise, you may have a smurf or other equally small being under your dash swinging off the steering column... have had this before too! |

I like the sound of your r-w-kilowattage !!
In my case it's more likely to be a baby ewok rather than a smurf

It's still doing it - seems to be getting worse.
Did a really bad one on the way home tonight - massive wheel wobbles. Then all gone. It's like something comes loose - the whole wheel etc wiggles then it goes back into line and stops. It's weird - I hate taking intermittent faults to the dealer because they never replicate for them. "There is a problem - I swear !" I reckon it is the rack again

Check wheel bearings - make sure they are adjusted properly.
could be the brakes grabbing the disc slightly - worse if the bearings arent tight. |

I'm having a similar problem with my BF at the moment, although the vibrations are not as violent.
Tightening the rack adjuster made a fair difference. A suspension place told me it was the front lower control arm bushes that had failed, and they so feel very very sloppy, so I'm doing them this weekend. Already done the upper control arms and have noticed less of a vibration since. This started happening to mine around the 42,000km mark. Now hitting 49,000km. Wheels were balanced, checked and repaired where needed, but the problem persisted. Suspension place told me that B series with low profile tires put alot of stress on the front bushes and they just fail, as they are a crappy fluid filled design. I know of another bloke on AFF with similar problems, and he changed everything in the front end, lastly doing the rack and that solved his problem. |

Took it to Titan Ford today and they said it might be the brakes just grabbing slightly. Said they had seen it a few times before. They pulled apart the booster and adjusted some rod or something. $110 I have only driven it 30kms since. It did seem to feel better. As this was an intermittent issue, only time will tell but if this has fixed it I will be stoked!

Dang - I spoke too soon.
It was back today but a lot less severe - almost felt "muted" compared to previous sessions. So I think the problem has been isolated, just needs to be worked on. Titan Ford did say they may have to do it a couple of times till it was right. Problem is they have to take it apart each time, adjust it - put it back together, drive test it. Each time. I don't know the internals of teh brake booster to understand what they mean particulary. But at least I can confirm it is the brakes "sticking" ABS style. Question: Is there a difference between a BF XR6T/XR8 brake booster and a BA mk2 XR6 brake booster? Is it possible my booster does not like the larger calipers/rotors I have fitted?
