Hey im lookin at gettin a new car some time down the track, and just windered what people had to say about the new sports mode auto's in the BA's over a manual. Is there still a fairly descent gap between manuals and the autos?

Although I dont own either a manual or a BA, I have driven my Dad's BA XR6-T numerous times, and can say its far better than my Auto EF Fairmont. Off the line, its still an auto, can help that, but when choosing the manual shift while moving its fantastic!!! I love down shifting with the BA, as it actually downshifts and retards the car with the motor unlike my EF.

yeh those new sports shifts in the manual go hard hey. Though they dont compare nothing to changing gears it still feels like you have a chance and believe me they do.

are they bringing out a new auto box with the mark two or is it the same? Somewhere I thought I was reading Ford designing a 6 speed auto....

I am not sure what the new 6 speeds are like but I don't think I like mum's T5 box.. It clunks all the time due to a crappy drivetrain and this is made more obvious with a manual.

I've heard it said that the auto box is much stronger/more reliable than the manual.

Maybe...but the auto is harder to repair.

Yea but if its stronger and more reliable the chances of needing it repaired are fairly slim. So then maybe the cost is warranted.

my old mans got a ba and the sports shift is good fun, not as fun as a manual but it sure beats a normal auto, wish i had one on the ef..

cant say i have driven it on the open road, but when my dad has used the sequential (spelling) it was great, good take off even in third from a stand still.

Oh, I've driven sequential also.. It's damn cool! Not as satisfying as manual, but at least it won't let you overrev the engine like my box does..

so if your lazy and hate manuals for city driving then its the way to go. The only thing i can relate it to is power shift in tractors where u set ya revs and then use a button to bang it through the gears. Similar i guess.

Does anyone know if the sport shift mode in the auto locks the torque converter? if not why not?
