my 2003 fairmont ghia i6 is shifting hard...could it be the auto slowly going? the tranny cooler leaking problems you guys have described has made me paranoid that it might be the cause of the hard shifting

I fitted a external tranny cooler to my BA yesterday, cost me $150 for the cooler and a couple of hours in the shed and it was done, rather pay $150 than $3000. cheap insurance i reckon

the three grand was for bit more than a tranny cooler, plus i have plans to do modifying later down the track and i need the tranny a bit stronger.

BlownNC i noticed mine would slip a gear a few times when the cooler first leaked

mate you dont need to make comments like that, you misinterpreted - i think what zombie was implying is that if your cooler did give in, it wouldnt cost you three grand, he's was 3 grand due to the additional upgrades done to the trans.

What exactly are all those bits good for? What are the weak points of the 4 speed auto? I've spoken to quite a few transmission workshops and they all seem to have conflicting stories..

take a read in the driveline section at fordxr6turbo.com and you will see numerous threads of problems people have had with their 4-speed, majority are people who are running at least stage 2 mods and up.
It will give you an idea of what some of the major shops round oz have been doing for transmissions for xr6t's as well, for the 4-speeds and 6-speeds
