Hi all, i have an 03 BA XT that's only done about 165thousand kms on the clock, and last week while when i left work i went right around a round a bout and just as the transmission was changing from 1st to 2nd it slipped for a second. I did notice this instantly and gently gave the car a little throttle and it was able to engage correctly. Now im noticing this more and more and its only when changing from 1st - 2nd.
Things tried. In automatic mode slips from 1st - 2nd In performance automatic mode it doesn't do this. In Shifter mode...aka i change gears it doesn't do this. Ive noticed in high revs the gear change will happen with no problems at all. At low revs ive noticed this more. Now the problem is intermittent so sometimes it will only do it once and then it doesn't happen again for the duration of my trip, and other times when driving from a cold start it never happens. Ive spoken to my mechanic about this as i thought it may be tranny fluid and he informs me that the transmission in my car is a closed unit and doesn't need to be serviced.I can confirm this because i read the manual and it specifically states that the Transmission is quote "Factory Sealed" so im guessing this means it shouldn't need maintainence. My question is and please correct me if im wrong but is the gear change at what revs decided and acted on by the computer or does the transmission do this itself (Now i read that it looks like a stupid question). Im just wondering if perhaps (if the computer does control) the computer says ok change....no wait....ok engage now. Im hopeing someone can provide some pointers in what may be happening even some tests to try and fix the problem. Im hopeing this isnt a problem in the transmission itself as this will most likley be the last straw with ford as ive spent nothing but big bucks on the last 2 falcons i had.

Check under the car at the rear of the transmission for oil on the underbody.
Could be that the rear seal is leaking and you are down on fluid. Next check the engine coolant for signs of cross contamination with the tranmission which would indicate a radiator failure. BTW its not sealed for life it can and should have the fluid and filter replaced once in a while, it just does not have a dip stick to prevent overfills and wrong fluids by people that don't know better..

This is the biggest crock of sh*t you here from people regarding transmissions with no dipstick. Trans fluid breaks down, it gets burnt & it gets dirty. The transmission needs to be serviced regularly to perform correctly. In fact Ford dealerships do transmission services on their own so called "factory sealed" transmissions. Get it serviced, its not that expensive

b series are bad enough, having to use a tomb thumb bottle to pump oil into the trans but i herd the bf and fg autos have a grub screw as the fill hole for the box, i belive this is fords way of making more money so the common man cannot work on his car!either way, id go for every two years /40-60k flush and new oil in the box. (for a car worth maintaining) i drove a ed for 80k and only EVER put fuel in it, $300 bargin and it never failed me:D
i like to over maintain a car but i have plenty of time and tools on my hands to do this |

Firstly, I'd suggest getting a new mechanic.
Secondly, if it has been sealed and not maintained it's whole life, I have read they generally give up the ghost at about 170,000km. Comparitively, Taxi's get about 400,000km - 450,000km from them if they have been maintained regulary with an external cooler. As mentioned, have a look in the overflow bottle to see if the red transmission fluid has mixed with the coolant. This is a common problem where the internals of the radiator break down creating cross-contamination. If this has happened, the Gbox is a ticking time bomb, and you will require a new radiator and a rebuilt gearbox. Hopefully, you are just low on fluid. Take it to a proper gearbox place and ask them to do a full flush (not just a pan-drop) and also install an external transmission cooler as this eliminates the chance of the cross-contamination happening in the future and also keeps the box cooler = longer life.

my transcooler in my rad split, i got oil into the coolant but no coolent in the gbox oil. im guessing this is because the trans has more pressure than the cooling sys? until the car is turned off:|

My external cooler runs by itself, that is it not hooked up inline with the radiator cooler for that very reason.

Thanks for all the replies guys...i jumped the gun abit with the whole thing being a whinging b**ch and whatnot. Anyway i took it to an Auto specialist on my way to work last week and explained to situation to him. He asked me to pop to bonnet and said "Yep your transmission coolers cracked, and is leaking into the water cooling system" The whole friggin radiator bottle was bright red. Anyway he told me not to drive it anymore and get it to him first thing monday morning. Dropped it off monday and got a call about 2ish to say it was ready....the Pan was dropped and oil change / Aftermarket cooler installed and bypassed from the radiator completly / Inhibitor had to be put in the coolant to flush out the tranny fluid cycling the block and other things. Anyways shes all back and working well althought the car died 3 days after but that's another story.
Apparently its common for the BA cooler in the Radiator to crack. And expensive to get fixed.

is it only a common problem with the BA's or the BF as well?
I just had my transmission serviced after a 100k of not being touched at all and its much better now, the oil was soo brown! Cheers Phil

Mate ur very lucky as worst case u would of had to fork out for a reco trans.................
A radiator should be changed every 5 yrs or 100,000kms to avoid this problem or go external cooler but radiator does a better job cooling the trans. From now on u should service ur trans every 20,000kms or 12 months and shop around for prices and what oil brand they use. U should also replace ur radiator and thermostate as it probably never have.

hmm interesting, my car just came up to the 100 tho mark and will be 5 years in September this year. Is there a way you can inspect your radiator or is it the internal parts that rust out and s**t themselves?

They rust out internally and break down then mix coolant and trans oil................... i personally dont run the risk as its MUCH cheaper to replace radiator than anything else.
