I have the grommets that came with the EF diff handbrake cable, I may be able to use those. Will have a better look tomorrow.

Tolls Express have my pallet in their local yard for p/up Thursday morning. Not bad service 3 working days from Melb to Gosford.
Once home I will photograph the diff and engine for future reference.
Vince had it on his EB2 last Thursday so it's good for a known reference. I'll post pics of the detail work [calipers etc] on this thread Thurs afternoon. You probably won't need them but at least we know this setup works ok.

I am going out now to clean up the backing plate and brake lines and hit them with a spot of paint so they are ready to fit up to the new diff.

Ok

I had already put one replacement diff in the EB earlier this year. It was just a SS 3.27 diff I had in my spare car. The original diff was making complaints and now resides under the parts car. I borrowed some parts from it to get the EF diff ready to bolt in.

I spent yesterday and today cleaning parts and preparing the EF diff to go into the EB.

This is what the backing plates and dust sheilds looked like AFTER I degreased and steam cleaned them.



After some work with a wire brush and my dremmel they turned out like this.




I was surprised to find out the backing plate was made of aluminium. For some reason I thougt is would be cast iron or something. Oh Well.

I then removed the 4 9/16th nuts holding the axles in and backing plates on and popped the axles out (use the discs on backwards with some nuts and use them like a slide puller). I installed the EB backing plates and put the axles back in and tightned the nuts up a bit at a time until it was snug.

I then installed the brake lines as the EF use a different arrangement. First I removed the EF handbrake cable. Then undo the breather from the left hand axle tube and install the brake line junction from the EB. I had bend the brake lines a little bit to route them through the old handbrake brackets. I used cable ties to keep them secure.

Pics of it ready to install tomorrow.






Once the diff is in the car, I will mount the current calipers and discs on and it should be good to go.

I also purchased the correct speedo gear from Ford for $14.

Will let you all know how it turns out.

Forgot to add in the e-mail, these pics are so much better than my much abused Ellerey's. It's also good to know for sure that I can swap in the ABS axles from the EB2 if I want to.

Didn't your EF diff have ABS axles? Mine does, but my EB doesn't.

I presume then that your EB has ABS fitted?

As far as I know you can swap axles from EBII onwards as they are all 28 spline. As I understand it, early EAs at least had 25 spline axles and therefore are not compatible.

From what I can tell from your photos, there is a small black box looking thing on the backing plate behind the disk, and I think that is the ABS pickup. Just pull one of the discs off and you should see the ABS ring on the axle.

Yes it has ABS standard on the XR6 diff. and is fitted to my EB2.
Sorry I wasn't very clear, the ABS on the EL is a later version and I don't know if it is backwardly compatible to the EB2 modulator. I should have added an "etc"after axles in my post, the axles are interchangeable to my knowledge, it's the sensors [pickup] I'm unsure of, I'll soon find out. This is actually the first time I have ever had more than the most elementary contact with ABS, usually just removing and replacing like items, so its alearning experience for me.

By the looks of that diff hat its a EL one. So the Watts Linkage point is lower and will reduce a old flacons body roll a whole heap.

Well It's in.

And I think it has a buggered pinion bearing.

I fairly howles like a banshee.

I wil take it to a diff place in the morning to see if they can diagnose it. And yes I did check to see if it had oil in it. Does anyone know if you have to dissassemble the diff to change a pinion bearing?

The only hiccup I had putting it in is that the EF/EL diffs use different swaybay brackets, and I had to make a trip to the wreckers to get the correct ones.

Will let you know what the result is.

MATE !!! Checkthe Diff Angle. It could be out. You may need 350mm upper arms to straighten the Diff and Axle length so its all level.

Does it Howl and Vibrate.
I had that problem with my conversion.

No vibration, just noise.

The car is lowered, in fact I installed 10mm spacers when I put the diff in to raise it a tad. As it is an EB, I am not sure if I can install the shorter upper control arms and bracket.

Should and LSD be difficult to rotate by hand? My single spinner rotates far more easily than the LSD does.

Now my diff was sitting for a number of years, and I suspect that the outer pinion bearing may have dried out/coroded during this time.

I guess I will find out tomorrow.

put it on axlestands. but put the stands under thediff to similate the car being on its wheels
and then stick it in drive and slimb under and have a look at everything.

Did you change the diff oil ???

im thinking shorter upper controlls to str8en it up.

normally a bearing will be okay evean after sititng a few years.
