Sorry,

Yes a lsd should be difficult to rotate because its driving both axles.

but if you feel slight grinding feeling it could be a bad bearing.

Thanks for the reply.

No I didn't change the oil, and I am relunctant too until I have had it diagnosed tomorrow. If they take the hat off to inspect it then I am just flushing money down the drain.

It did feel a bit rough when turning it over by hand so am thinking the outer pinion bearing.

Worst case, I will take the diff back out and put my old one back in. I am driving to QLD next week, so need to be sure its all good. I would rather sort it out when I get back.

When i got my EF diff and stuck it in my EL I changed the oil drove gently for two weeks then flushed again.

I did that to flush out all the stale oil and clean the inside.

Oil is cheep. Diff centres in the LSD flaviour arnt hehe.

In the morning I will put it up on stands and see if I can isolate/identify where the noise is coming from before I go see a couple of Diff places.

The little bit I drove it, it certainly feels more lively than the 3.27. Oh Well.

More news tomorrow.

Well, I saw a diff specialist this morning and it needs all new pinion and carrier bearings, about $460 to fix it.

So I pulled it back out of the car, second diff swap in two days, and put the old one back in.

I will put the XR6 diff in the garage until after christmas and look at getting it fixed then.

Never mind. My primary concern is my trip to QLD next week. The car needs to be 100% for the trip, and my funds are allocated already.

The Diff Bunter has is a 3.27. I have one of those in my wifes ED Ghia but it needs servicing as it spins one wheel. Thanks for the heads up tho.

Have a safe and happy trip,
I'm also on AFF and have been watching your thread. I hope I have more luck than you, although this diff was running OK recently. I think I'll finish putting the EL engine in the car, run it on my old diff to make sure all is well, then pop the LSD in next week. We also have to visit family in Qld before Xmas and understand your position. I would prefer the LSD in for that trip but the std one has been there many times and is a good standby as is yours.

Hello once again.

I finally have an update for this thread.

The diff has been dropped off at a diff specialist. They looked at it for free and even took the hat off and checked the teeth for wear etc. They said the LSD needs shimming etc, which I expected, and bearings.

So for $480 they will put in new carrier, pinion and axel bearings, and service/shim the LSD centre, setting it all back up again.

Should be better than new.

I will be picking it up next Wednesday afternoon and Paulmac hopes to come down on the Friday and help me put it in. While we are at it I hope to be able to do something about the pinion angle with a bit of parts swapping.

Will post how it all goes.

i done basically the same thing in a couple of hours lol.....less hassle by the sounds of it though.

Smashed my ef mont, had 3.45 el lsd, so i put it straight into my xe, f**k the abs sensors off, el handbrake on diff, join it to the xe original, do the same brake lines from old skool diff, and put in. oh and change flange on tailshaft to suit diff pinion.

all using xe upper and lower arms as well as sway bar and even xe rear springs. its amazing how ford have pretty much stuck with the same everything.

I forgot to add that for $50 I bought an alloy tailshaft. The tailshaft fixed a vibration issue I had. My old tailshaft had lost a weight and the uni's were probably well past there used by date. Remember the EB has done well over 400,000kms now.

Well, it is finally done.

Yes, after all the crap, pain and heartache, I can finally smile.

I picked up the Diff yesterday, Wednesday afternoon.

Paulmac kindly volunteered to help me put it in on Friday morning, but I couldn't sit around all day on my butt with nothing to do, so I put it in today LOL.

Some progress shots. Look no Diff!!!!

As part of the install I decided to use EL Upper Trailing arms. These are 20mm shorter (320mm) than the EB arms (340mm). The idea was to alter the pinion angle and get rid of some Pinion Grumble I was getting while carrying passengers in the rear.

The following shots were taken with the weight of the car on the differential. I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

What this has shown is that with Super Low Springs, using an EB/ED/EF housing with a single upper trailing arm mounting hole, the EL arms increase the pinion angle sharply. If however you have an EL housing with the dual mounting holes, there should be no issues using the EL upper arms.

It is my opinion that if I was to redrill my upper brackets slightly below and forward of the existing mounting hole, then I would see an improvement in the pinion angle. I may do this in the future.

Needless to say, I put the EB upper arms back in. :D

One of the more painful parts of the conversion was changing the speedo gear. What a royal Pain In The a**.

I have not had much opportunity do drive it, but in the short trips I did do this afternoon, the car felt snappier and I could feel the LSD working.

At this early stage, I am very happy so far. I will report how it goes over the next few days.
