hey guys...
im currently running an auto with 3.9 diff ratio (very happy with acceleration) but on the weekend i will be converting to manual and im wondering what would be the best diff ratio to roughly match the results

Last edited by ringastinga on Wed Sep 22, 2010 7:10 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

I have seen guys mention a 3.7something ratio for the manual. TBH it depends on what your wanting to do with your car, where it makes it's power & the gearbox ratios...
Cheers ToranaGuy

I'd go 3.7's for a similar result to 3.9s behind the auto.

T5
1st 3.25:1 2nd 1.99:1 3rd 1.29:1 4th 1:1 5th .72:1 BTR 1st 2.39:1 2nd 1.45:1 3rd 1:1 4th .68:1 the closest match would be a 2.92:1. even then 1st and 2nd would still be shorter so in closing, in terms of gear ratios, any diff you choose is going to be better then your current auto with 3.9s. just grab a 3.45, common and works well.

T5 will be fun with 3.9s, might surprise you. If not, I'm pretty happy with 3.45s but I wouldnt mind 3.7/3.9s.... and a T56.

Ebay, EL Xr's had this ratio and I have a feeling there is a few dunnydoors with this ratio too... So they should be able to be picked up without too much effort. Cheers ToranaGuy

EF and EL XR6s had that ratio, some V8s had a 3.23lsd as well as most other models.
You'll be on 2400 to 2500 rpm @ 100ks. |

I just converted from auto to manual with 3.45's and I think going shorter in diff gears would be painful for every day driving.
Sure would be fun accelerating, but going from the auto you will already be hitting redline before you know it.

Nooo, not painful at all. Shorter gears make driving easier, you can pull from just above idle in third no worries with 3.45s. You need a ripshifter and shortened stick to take full advantage though.

You need a ripshifter and shortened stick to take full advantage though. That would make the 1st couple of gear's run out much quicker wouldn't it? I currently have a 5.3 to 1 diff in my mighty boy (yes 5.3 to 1! to help the little original 543cc engine get the ute moving), and I'm swapping it for a 4.2 to 1, much more suited to the extra legs of the slightly worked 800cc engine. I find that 1st gear runs out very, very quickly when i drop the clutch right now. In mates mighty boy's, who have the 4.2 to 1 diff ratio, they get a lot more out of each gear, don't have to grab for the next gear as quickly either. Sure, it launches really good with 5.3 to 1, but it hurts economy & keeps the rev's up at freeway speeds, increasing fuel consumption & engine wear. Cheers ToranaGuy

Not really, first will do 50 something and second 90 something when you're up it. While yes they do run out quicker as you'd expect due to the shorter ratio if you're driving around normally I much prefer it. You dont have to change gears as much as you'd think as like I mentioned before you can stay in the higher gear longer without lugging the motor. If it was a car driven in the city a lot theres no way I'd get a higher diff ratio, you'd find you'd be shifting just as much. That and being easier to take off and being able to creep thru traffic on idle in first without having to slip the clutch as much.
Lower diff ratio is easier on the clutch when taking off as well, in both normal and hard launches as there is less load to get moving. |
