My EBII auto may be on the way out. I would like to know what secondhand gearbox would be the newest, lowest kay for replacement. My impression is the BA auto is not really an option, but the AU might be?

Maybe just save yourself the trouble and get a reco or low K EBII auto.

AU will bolt straight up once you have swapped the bellhousing and i think the netural safety switch.

Au ones are the smoothest shifting box but are known to fail more often. Best bet would be a ef/el one as they have a bigger oil pump in them over the eb ones. Also make sure you get the stall converter as well with the box as the eb one will not fit ef/au auto’s.

Where is the "neutral safety switch"? My EBII can start in neutral or park. Is the AU's system different?

When you say "stall converter" do you mean the torque converter? Do you know of any other issues with swapping in EF/EL/AU box's? btw, i am already using an AU bellhousing, because i have an AU motor.

I can pick up an EL fairmont with 255,000kms on it from just up the road for $900. It has a good service history, good driving history, and drives really well to me. I would much prefer a newer gearbox though.
Otherwise i am looking at $850 plus transport for a 160,000km AU auto with a 6mths parts and labour warranty. Or $2000 for a reco box.
