Hi all, i bought a short shifter for my T5 conversion off ebay and for those of you who have purchased this and installed it i have a few questions regarding some parts that came with it.
It came with the following bolts: 2 Large stud screws with a hex head in one end, 2 Large nuts 4 Small stud screws with a hex head in one end, 4 small nuts 4 Washers 4 hex head bolts Ok so i used the 2 hex head bolts and washers to fit the middle part of the lever to the bottom, and the other 2 hex head bolts and washers to fit the top part of the lever to the middle part. i have figured out the other 2 large stud screws and nuts are for the adjustment for the fore and aft movement (thanks to BenJ's Thread Build) but my question is how much do i tighten these? can i tighten them after fitting if it requires adjusting? If i do them too tight will i not get the gears in? Also the other 4 small stud screws and nuts left over, im assuming they are to use if i dont want to use the hex head bolts on the shifter lever??? Or are these used to the shifter to the box?? Also whats the difference between the firmer springs and the softer ones in the shifter? what do people who have tried both recomend?? thanks guys!!

Also whats the difference between the firmer springs and the softer ones in the shifter? what do people who have tried both recomend?? thanks guys!! the 4 small studs,nuts and washers are for bolting the shift to the box.. the 2 large bolt/grub bolts are to be adjusted when the shift is in the car. you need to put the shift into 1st then adjust the large bolt up just before it touches the shift rod then tighten the nut to lock it in position... the same with the rear bolt, put it into 2nd and do the same. the small heavier springs give you the option of giving the shift more positive return to neutral making the change from 2nd to 3rd more direct.. and remember to use loctite on the bolts and threads as they may vibrate loose.. |

I adjusted mine after installation.
I found I had put the stop bolts too close to the shifter shaft, and that under heavy throttle it vibrated annoyingly. I backed them off half a turn and problem solved. BenJ

Thanks for your input exactly the info I needed. Can I not use the original bolts that came off the box for the shifter?
Really excited about the conversion now! I just have to finish my landscaping (hopefully this weekend) and ill get stuck into it next weekend...

you could use the original bolts but i thought they were a little to short..(not alot of thread)

Sorry in a little late to this party, I hope somone still reads this.
I've just purchased a kit off eBay, I don't know if it has any instruction papers but it consists of. Shifter "housing" (I guess lol) 2 large studs 2 large nuts 4 small studs 4 small nuts 4 washers 2 springs from what I've read off here and know in guessing it goes together like this. 2 large studs and nuts as the stoppers. 4 studs washers and nuts to bolt it all to the box. 2 spare springs of a heavier tension to swap if desired. Reuse the plastic shim of the old shifter too of course Put in first gear and adjust til just touching then give it half a turn or so off. Put in second gear and repeat. Loctite it all up as well. Would Medium strength be good enough?(the orange anti rattle one is it?) I'm going to give it a go this Saturday along with the first oil change for the box in about 2-3 years/15,000 klms approx so that'll be somthing to check out too. On the oil subject too I'm jus gonna use castrol DX 111 and the nulon gearbox additive like what's in it now. I also got the as a dry box on a shelf off a mate who rebuilt it for TAFE, I looked for a while and eventually went with the factory suggestion and have had no dramas at all.
