i just cleaned out caliper but when i filled up reservoir fluid is going to the front but not the back brakes, i just tried to bleed brakes one at a time according to manual. when engine is off pedal goes hard when engine running pedal goes soft like no brakes, apart from the pressure regulator valve in the master cylinder getting blocked, what can be done, thanks.

Booster might be stuffed.

i have same problem, i had a leaking cruise control stop switch replaced it still spongy, i find if i pump it a few times it gets rock hard, ill attempt to bleed the brakes with engine running as you did. i also heard if air gets between booster and abs it cant be bled normally have ot take it to get a purge via an electronic signal form the ECU

Don't forget to remove the light switch from the master cylinder while bleeding brakes or the proportioning valve can jam and cause a spongy pedal

im using the gregorys manual, doesnt say anything about booster to abs module, it just says if reservoir drains and air gets in to repeat the whole process again, but it does say that if you have abs and you dont get the desired results to get it checked, i had the reservoir drained so air did get in, drove the car after bleeding and brakes seem fine.
i thought that maybe the proportioning valve may have gotten blocked cause the brake failure or hydraulic failure light on the dash came up but after i did the bleeding and pumped the pedal several times the light went off. once again the manual doesnt mention this but thanks for the advice. |

just a precautionary note, i had the car on all four wheels, im no expert but i think its dangerous to have the engine running while the car is up on stands.

theres a brake warning switch on the master cylinder which is activated when theres a loss of pressure and a warning light comes up on the dash.

it is normal for any car with power assisted brakes to have a hard pedal when engine is off.

i had a quick search on the internet and read a few articles which suggests that is the case ie. cars with power assisted brakes need to have engine running to bleed brakes. this is only the second time ive bled brakes, the first time was with a mitsubishi ute which bled completly by itself, no pumping brakes no engine running.
