hey guys just replace the front pads on ther EL XR6. just wondering do u bleed the brakes while the car is running or with it off. because i bleed them without the car running but they still dont feel as good as they were before. i was using a clear tube to see the air bubbles but its still not right?

With engine off. Do the brakes feel spongy? If so you may still have air bubbles in the system.

yeah they still feel spongy for some reason. will it make a difference if the car is running when bleeding them?

When you bled the brake, did you push the pedal all the way to the floor? Also did you leave the master cylinder cover off and topped the fluid up when you bled the brakes? Did you do front system only...if so did you start bleeding the front passenger first and then front drivers side?

yeah we did the back first then move to the front. we started from the left then to the right but im gonna redo them and see if it makes any difference.

well i rebled the brakes again and still not the same. soon as i start the car up and press the brake pedal in it still feels like there is air going back in there and still a little spongy no way near as good before i change the front pads over.

hmmm, not to sure then...maybe someone else who is more well informed than I can help you out.
Let's just hope no seal is stuffed.

thanks for ur help phongus. they still work but not aswell as before. i have to get them check out once im up in brisbane next week.

The car doesn't need to be running, makes no difference and probably best not to have it running if you're getting under it. Get yourself a 1 person bleed kit from autobarn or where ever I find them the easiest to use and bleed them in this order. Passenger side rear, drivers side rear, pass front, drvr front, always start on the longest brake line and work your way in so the shortest is the last one bleed. Make sure the bleed valves are clean and done up tightly (but be very careful not to over tighten them). And take a look around the insides of your wheels for any signs of leaking (could indicate buggered seals in the wheel (slave) cylinders, if you have drums on the rear like mine) And lastly while your under there, check all the brake lines for any signs of leaking (usually highlighted by corrosion on the lines) especially around any bends or joiners.

Did you push the brake pedal to the floor when bleeding????.....if so, this may have caused a problem....if the system hasn't been looked after very well, there'll be a wear pattern/corosion in the master cylinder bore, and when you pump it to the floor, your making it go past where it usually stops.....buggers the buckets/seals.
Vacuum bleeding is the go. Your car should have ABS too...if it is an XR6.

I have only ever used the method Phonus mentioned above, a 1 person bleed kit is all I have ever used, and works fine every time.
could you have possibly cracked something? twisted or split a line? Are there any signs of fluid that are not normally there? If they continue to feel like crap, I would hesitate to suggest a seal has been done on the master cylinder, or the cylinder has a crack in it somewhere allowing pressure to leak. Alternatively you have not overfilled the reservoir have you?

Hey guys.
Have ou bed in the pads?? A set of pads not bedded in will give a poor pedal feel. Also did you machine rotors?? There could be a high spot or lip on the rotor that isn't letting the pad make full contact with the rotor. Cheers Stu |
