Hey everyone...I have new front slotted disk brakes I want to put into my EL. I am planning on doing it myself but not sure how important it is with some of the procedures involved.

I read through the Gregories manual and they say after removing the disk and then putting the new one in, you have to tighten the hub bearing nut to 30Nm while rotating the hub (in which direction :?), then it says to loosen it half a turn and then tighten the same nut to 1.5Nm.

The part which I might find difficult in doing is doing the nut up again at 1.5Nm. I don't have a torque wrench that goes as low as that, so how could I go about doing it? Would 1.5Nm be just finger tight or when you feel the nut getting tighter?

Sorry about the heaps of questions, I want to attempt this without losing my brake.

when u rotate the disc and direction is fine

as long as it gets rotated

as for the 1.5 nm just do the nut to 30nm and the whole back off 1/2 turn and re tighten by 1/4

should be good :)

Thanks Frank. :D I will attempt it then.

Another thing, the manual also says to clean all the components with some solvent to remove all the grease, and then repack the bearings. Do I need to grease the other components too or just pack the bearings with high melting temp grease only?

EDIT: Another thing, once I'm all done, how should I drive the car in the first week or so, so that I don't warp the new disks quickly? I remember reading somewhere about what to do and what not to do when wearing the new brake pads and disks in...though not too sure where I read it.

Yeah, pictures tend to tell a thousand words :D.

Well I managed to get the old disk off, cleaned off all the grease on the little components (half a bottle of degreaser on the bearings :shock:) and then stupid me realised I needed a new seal. I called up Repco and they don't supply them, all brake places are closed and it's long weekend. GaY!!!.

This may seem like a long shot, but is there anyway of salvaging the old seal (looks in good condition) or if anyone in Melbourne have spare seals that be excellent :D.

Bursons,repco, autobahn, all sell brakes,so may have seals. Normally supplied with discs. You have to bed-in your new pads,so it needs normal driving to prevent warpage.

I called up repco and they said they didn't sell the seals. Seals didn't come with the new disk brakes either so now I am a sitting duck...booo.

I managed to get the seal off. It is in one piece and in good condition. Took a hell of an effort. Though before I start wacking it on the new disks...does the seal serve a really big task that it needs to be replaced with a new one...even though the old is still in tact with all its rubber as well as the metal frame still in it's shape?

If not, then I am not a sitting duck anymore.

Seals dont come with rotors but with bearing kits. If you are replacing the rotors its a wise move to fit new bearings too. Phong if only you could still drive your car to my place as i would have helped and shown you how to do it. The seal is a MUST as if its not there wheel bearing grease will end up all over the rotor and pads causing brakes to perform poorly and damage pads and rotor.

Sorry Phong, yes the seals do come with new bearings, so I take it that you are using the old ones. Just make sure that there is plenty of new grease through them.

I can ride my bike :lol:

Well the seal is in now, I reused the old one and double checked that the rubber does in deed touch the end of the spindle thing. Bearings are in pretty good condition i must say. Nothing broken or worn out, just need to pack it with grease now. When I put the braided lines on I might do the seals and bearings again if something isn't right about it. I'll keep you all updated to see how it goes...if the s**t hits the fan, you'll know.

Thought I'd give an update. Took me bloody longer then expected. Things just never go right when you do things for the first time and time just flies by as you do stuff. I mean I did get distracted along the way.

Anyways after a whole day of work, I have managed to get everything in and took it for a test drive. Right now it feels about the same as before but I guess it needs to settle in more. Took it around the block and I was quiet happy to actually feel the car braking to a stop without the annoying shuddering of the wheels.

I shall now drive it sensibly for the next 6 days and hope that it settles in quickly...cause it will need to brake hard without warping by drag day :D.

did u change the brake fluid?

a decent fluid makes a HUGE difference
