Hey guys,
Noticed recently that under braking the steering wheel is vibrating a bit. Whipped the front calipers off and the pads are worn, could this be the cause? Is there a chance a straight replacement of pads will end the issue or am I gonna have to get the rotors machined? thanks |

Rotors will need to be machined. new pads will stop it temporarily.

Just did the front brakes on the BA XR8 as it had a bad shudder & it worked out about the same price to replace rotors as it was to get them machined. But you will definatley need to machine or replace rotors:)

typical problem, will need new disc rotors or get your old ones machined back flat, replace the pads with good ones that maybe some one can recomend on her for you? if you were going to replace the rotors an drive the car hard maybe look into getting slotted ones so they dont heat up as much which will fight the warping of the discs off for a little while longer

look for any components that arn't allowing the pads to retract properly. Mine was calliper slides, others have suggested the bar that goes in to the booster is sometimes too long

Been a while since I've had brakes machined, am I right in saying they're only about $20-$30 per disc?

The last quote I got was about $250 for the front...which included machine, pads and labour. You can get new discs and pads for about $300 or less, depending what you buy obviously. Just need to put them in yourself. bry40l wrote: i got quoted alot more than that, i just bought new ones I think you should have shopped around more...machining discs and putting new pads in usually doesn't cost more than a new set without labour...

my mechanic up the road is machining the front pair of discs for $44 for the pair. Removing the rotors now to drop them off with him. Not a bad price I reckon.

Ohhh you're dropping them off. Well that's even better. The place I got the quote from was without removal...I think they remove the brake caliper, put the machine on using caliper mounting points and it just does it while on the car. Pretty nifty!

haha yeah it is, the machine just looks like a big a*** caliper. Yeah gonna drop them off and save money on labour, just hoping he doesn't tell me I need new ones. If so Ill just get some nice slotted babies.

i did my mums car not long ago (EL Falcon non abs) and it cost me 120 for front rotors and 25 for pads and did it myself.machining the rotors would of cost me about 40 each disk so better just get new ones.
