There's no T56 that will bolt straight up in an E-series. Mal Wood can make you one for about $5K. Gear breakage depends entirely on your driving behaviour. And you can DIY for less. Custom gearbox crossmember, shortened tailshaft, new yoke, custom speedo pickup/Commodore extention housing (the latter means shifter in stock location) BA clutch pedal, custom fluid lines. $4k depending on how much you do yourself. In the XT, (which runs a T5, not a TR3550) the yoke is different. The T56 yoke doesn't bolt up to the rubber doughnut in the T5 tailshaft. If you need a T56 yoke, I have one for sale, brand new, never been used. I know the XR6T runs a different tailshaft to the XT. Get a crossmember from Ford, and a gearbox mount. People will say that you have to change the clutch, but that is incorrect, a T5 clutch works with the T56.
