I have a blown 5.0 with a BTR auto that now has a slipping second gear, so seems I will be up for a rebuild.
So I wanted to know if there is a decent shop around Brisbane that can do a performance rebuild for the btr? I know DTM Automatic Transmissions (VIC), Bayswater Automatics (VIC), and MV Automatics (SA) do a performance rebuild, but that doesn’t help a Queenslander. I had a rebuild from Beta automatics about 8 years ago, but they aren’t around anymore. I’m hoping to retain the BTR as I prefer a 4 speed instead of going for a C4 or other 3 speed. Any recommendations or experiences would be appreciated.

Do it on exchange basis with one of the out of state places.

I didn't think of that. I might have to give one of them a ring and see how much freight to exchange the boxes would be on top of a build.
Obviously I don't want to spend the earth, but also don’t want a rebuilt box to fail again. Can anyone recommend a BTR rebuilder? One of the above mentioned or another?

DTM are expensive. I know MV have an aftermarket valve body available, that is quite good. A mate of mine has an MV spec BTR with the valve body in a 370rwhp turbo EB. It's now 5 years old and still going strong.

That sounds promising, as I have about the same amount of power.
Would still be nice to find a local shop as I don’t know for sure if the box needs a full rebuild or not. I do get the feeling however that once I take it to a shop they will say it needs a full build, and if it’s already on the hoist with the pan dropped I’d probably get them to do it. I have changed out the S1 to S5 solenoids with no luck and I won’t be doing any more to it, unless I swap in a rebuilt box on exchange basis. Something I would rather a shop do anyway, with the car up on a hoist.

I know a guy for those boxes but he is in sydney i think he does interstate also if u want a name and number let me know and i can shoot u a im, food for thought you never know also wolf 3d do a plug and play solution for that setup if you want to go that far

Im now thinking of putting a BA XR6 Turbo Automatic Transmission in and swapping the bellhousing.
Would it be possible to use this trans and just swap the bellhousings over? The XR6t trans seems the same (except it has no dip stick). I do have concerns that The EA-D torque converters actually have a different throat size to the XR6 ones and as such will not physically fit onto an EA-D trans. Does anyone know if this is the case?

I recommend DTM. They were the only ones around that would warranty one of their rebuilds for a decent amount of time, and they are the only ones I know of that have developed both a trans brake and full manual valve body for the BTR. I had one rebuilt there and their professionalism was excellent.
I doubt wether a 6 cylinder box would fit because V8 boxes are longer and input shaft is different? |

I thin I will have to give them a call.
I am now toying with the idea of doing a rebuild myself. The car isnt a daily driver so i have the time, just never done a trans build before. Its a bit daunting, but it might be worth a go if i can do it properly. I will ring DTM and see if its worth my while doing it myself. Biggest PITA would be getting the trans out without a hoist i think.

Ok so it seems the BA boxes are different, but are the XR6 TURBO boxes a 97LE box?
the same as the AU V8?

I think boxes can be swapped around between all models, but only if you swap a 6 cylinder version with another 6 cylinder version, or a V8 version with one from another V8. There are a length and input shaft difference between them i'm pretty sure, accounting for the different lengths between 6 cylinder engines and the V8's. Most internals can be swapped and V8's use a different valve body.

I dug this up doing some research...
EA = Borg-Warner M51 (I6 only) which was a dumb 3-speed auto EAII = BTR 85SXLE (I6 only) which was the first electronic 4-speed EB~ED = BTR 95LE (I6 and V8) EF~AU = BTR 93LE (I6) and BTR 97LE (V8) BA = BTR/ION 93LE (I6) and BTR/ION 97LE (I6T and V8) Im still not sure if i can do that swap and if the I6T ION 97LE is different to the AU 97LE. I believe an AU 97LE is a direct swap for an ED 95LE. I would also think an XR6 turbo transmission would be stronger than an xr6 NA and built quite different to handle the power of an I6T or V8. Anyway I'm guessing the actual number probably doesnt matter so much but rather the fitment.

i had http://www.geartorque.com.au/ do a standard full rebuild in my EF fairmont a few years ago. Price was very reasonable, think it was $1500 plus $250 fitting inc oil. Gearbox was shifting firm & trouble free with 2 different P plater owners thrashing the s**t out of it..... up until the car was written off last year i believe.

Thanks I will give them a buzz during the week.
I will want more than a standard rebuild as I will have 350-400 rwhp going through it. Which also puts the idea of rebuilding the box myself to rest.

If you are still thinking about tackling the rebuild yourself, here's some tips from a previous thread:
"I found an article in Street Machine Nov 09 describing how DTM Transmission beefs up the BTR automatic for serious performance. Here's the main changes: - Replace the tan/orange band with the dark grey high-energy one out of the BA. - Reprogram the shift points, etc in the stock ECU using HP Tuners, SCT or similar software. Full manual control requires an aftermarket ECU (Motec, Wolf, etc). - Custom larger front servo piston and cover, for more clamping force. Good for 800hp. - Adjust clutch clearance, valve body orifice sizing, and programming to speed up shifts. - Use the large/course tooth primary sun gear shaft and planetaries of the EA-AU and BA-on XR8 and Turbo. These are noisier but stronger. They also have oil holes down the center of the pinions; the BA's do not. - Use the EF-EL pump internals. Less drag than EA-ED, more volume than BA-on, more than enough for a high performance application. - Use the later clutch plates with radial grooves, rather than the cross-cut grooves of the earlier units. - Use the long-tooth reaction/reverse sun gear from the V8 for extra strength. - Replace all worn bushings (obviously) The BTR was used by Maserati for a while, so was designed to handle 8000rpm. DTM say that there are BTRs with these mods handling engine horsepower in the high 600's (500kw) with no issues." post1242120.html These comments were specifically for the six, so a couple of them won't apply to your V8.
