Does anyone know what socket will undo the rear extension housing on BTR93LE Auto Trans?
Would like to remove rear extension housing so I can change bush and seal. I assume driveshaft will need to be removed prior to removing rear housing extension. Thanks |

Thanks Hi, i think from memory (from the last time i looked at a box on the ground) you will need a torx style socket to remove the rear housing

Have to apologize went out with my torx sockets and none fitted, i dont think they are torx head sorry. i will add that i am looking at the trans out of a BF the bolts aren't 12 sided socket are they? Im sure ill be corrected later

No worries, I found out those bolts can come out with a normal 12mm -12 point socket, multipoint as opposed to 6 point socket. Apparently the 6 sided socket wont grab, but the multi pointed one will All good |

Ford don't make things easy.
Went to a wrecker today, had a go at removing the bolts from the diff holding the tail shaft, talk about tight, 15mm head with a 18mm nut, trying to undo those took a lot of strength, cracked the nut but nut would not undo any further so I went looking for an easy target. Managed to find another vehicle with tailshaft already removed. What fun taking the rear extension housing unit off. Four of 13mm bolts holding the housing to the chassis (cross member). 18mm nut center of cross member. Then 12mm torx bolts , four of. Speedo cable already been disconnected. I did not need the gearbox rubber mount, looked like it had better days. Finally managed to separate Rear Extension Housing from transmission. I decided to get one from a wrecked vehicle and replace with new bush and seal, otherwise if I took the unit of my car I would be stranded, bugger all transport where I am. Once I get the new bush and seal put in, it will be a matter of swapping over. As opposed to having greater time off the road, if you get my drift. Thanks for everyone's help |

What's the best method / tool to use to loosen the nuts / bolts of the driveshaft connecting the live axle?
Spanner alone is very hard i.e. 18mm nut with 15mm bolt head. Not keen to start on mine if I'm going to have the same result as I with reference to the one at the wreckers. |

try socket on one end & ring spanner on other [or ring on both] & have it so you push with one & pull with other [if tight tap one with a hammer to loosen]. I believe I also had it in park so tailshaft wouldn't spin. then when one was undone I would slip it outa park & spin tailshaft enuf for next. and so on.

Thanks, but I did try that on the wrecked vehicle, trouble was no matter how hard I tried I just could not turn the nut any further once it was loosen. I used a 9lb hammer to get the nut loosen, using an 18mm ring spanner on the nut and 15mm multi socket on the head. I got all 4 nuts loosen about 4 or 5 turns and no further, took awhile too. I was too knackered to go further, that's when I went looking for another wreck that already had the tailshaft disconnected to remove the rear extension housing. Before I attempt to do the same on my vehicle, I might have thought there was an easier method to crack open those nuts. Maybe a foot long thick metal pipe for extra leverage on those nuts maybe? |

then it prob has some locktite on it, which will make it bloooody hard to undo

Bloody Loctite.
Why would someone put Loctite on those nuts beats me, if they have been tightened to torque specifications then Loctite should not have been applied. Maybe wise for me to invest in a portable angle grinder with a thin metal cutting disc if need be if there's a next time involved. Cheers |

Could be all three.
Hopefully mine wont be that bad as I do remember I had taken the drive shaft off the diff when I fitted a reconditioned transmission about 3 years ago |
