How hard is/would ABS be to fit to an EF that didn't coem with it from factory? Change the front rotors, what else?

wiring loom is different, ABS module,pump, sensors, discs,

not that difficult .. I did it :D

You need to change the body wiring loom, engine looms, dash loom, install ABS rear and front rotors/axles, ABS control unit and the brake lines in the engine bay.

It sounds a lot of work but it is pretty much all plug and play!!

well that's next project when i get the car actually driving again first... front rotors are almost shagged so two birds one stone!

the front rotors have the ABS sensor ring on them .. the rears unfortunately are on the axle. While you can knock them off to swap onto your non-abs rear axle, I've been told it is a dodgy way of doing it as they can come loose again ... rear brake lines are the same .. the front and rear ones get rerouted via the abs module instead of straight from the master cylinder

I started a doco on it, should try and finish it..

yeah it'd be good if you can finish it. the diff i just fitted it out of an EF XR6 wagon, so I would of thought that'd have had abs, but i didn't notice anything different on it...?

it is not the diff

it is the axles that have the abs reluctor rings on them

it is easy but damn a fair bit of work for abs

iirc a abs car will take longer to stop than a non abs car in teh dry

ha ha, i live in Tassie we get 1 dry day a year!!!
when i say i have the EF XR6 wagon diff in, I did an axel to axel fit so I guess if it was on the axel of the EF XR6 wagon unless somewhere along the line it was removed, it should still be there and on my wagon now, so where do I look for it to check?

why put abs on ya car i reckon like learning to brae and s**t with non abs is good you learn the limitaions on the brakes and etc

no difference with ABS, you should still be able to learn the limits of your brakes without abs kicking in

ABS is quicker in the dry and wet because you have the most traction slowing down instead of just locking up the wheels and sliding. Non-abs cars can stop quicker in gravel and sand and stuff though because locked wheels will dig into the ground whereas and ABS equipped car will roll along the gravel which is unstable and will move instead of staying still like tarmac.

Greg's pretty much correct. Depends how much ABS wiring you can get hold of - you can just add the wiring to your existing looms - you really only need 2 wires to go into the cabin.
I fitted an EL Fairmont setup to my XH, but I did have my wagon handy as a comparison.

Have a look between the axle bearing area and the rear of the rear disc hub, should have a toothed ring on the axle. You might need to remove the rear discs to get access.

How about doing it the other way, converting my XR6 to non-ABS? Is it just the engine bay brake lines that are different?

It doesnt work anyway and I want to run intercooler piping through where the ABS module is.

that would be illegal. removing a factory fitted safety item.

just leave it all installed and move the modual if it doesnt work. (can you move it?)
