Hi guys.
Could quite possibly be the worst question ever asked on a car forum but just looking for any advise at the moment. My XG panel van has some 17' wheels on it and I need to replace a few things in the front end for RWC, but can't get the wheels off. This sounds bad, but I do know how to remove a wheel. The problem is that i can't find anything to fit over the wheel nuts to remove them that will fit into the hole they are in in the wheel. The nuts are larger than a 19mm bit, but 21 will not fit far enough in to go over the nut. I've tried every bit in my socket set and a 21mm 'thin walled' socket and every wheel brace i could find with no luck. Anyone else had this problem and what can I do to get this fixed? Thanks guys

Yeah thats my next destination if no luck here, just hoping someone might have had similar experiences and found something that worked.
Thanks mate

do you have a wheel brace? (i think thats what they are called, the cross-shaped one with the sockets on each end)
one of the sockets on a wheel brace should fit on your wheel nuts.

Yeah tried a wheel brace with 17mm, 19, 21 and 23 but yeah 19mm is too small and 21 is too fat to fit.

too fat to fit into the wheel holes ? By a lot or just a little, grind them down... some of the wheel braces don't have very smooth outer sides - rough from moulding, file it down on a grinder?

Yeah had a bit of a crack at that also the other day and couldn't get it to fit, starting to think they might be a strange size somewhere in between if thats possible. Or maybe i just need to attack it a bit more with a grinder, but is really thin now anyway.

it could possibly be an imperial size nut too.

They are an imperial stud anyway, 1/2", you've obviously just got a weird set of rims.
Usually the crossbraces are thin wall enough to get in there, you'll have to find either a really thin walled socket or modify a socket like happy suggested.

With my last set of wheels it took me quiet a while to find a wheel brace with sockets that has walls thin enough to fit into the holes in the wheels - sounds like the same situation your in.
The one I found that works was in the $10.00 bin at Repco. It's not the Motorgaurd ones they sell, but the one in there $10.00 discount tool bin. EDIT: i just went and had a look in the garage and the brand is TeamMechanix the part number is 410127. So if Repco don't have any they'll be able to tell you if they can get you one. |

The nut is more than likely 13/16" which is equal to 20.6375mm - pretty darn close to 21mm, and so a metric wheel brace should be fine to use. Hlaf the time wheel braces have both the metric and imperial size on them. But perhaps look for an imperial specific wheel brace as the slightly smaller socket might be just small enough to fit. |
