Anyone know if you can ADD an ABS ring to the front brake rotors of a NON ABS EF (let's say I bought a new set of rotors for a NON ABS EF coz I thought they were cheap as bro).??....
Budget boi. |

Yeah you can Dude - main thing is to be careful levering the old ones off to put on the new rotors - warp them too much and the excessive runout will have them scrub the ABS sensors.
Otherwise, to install, carefully tap them in with a piece of metal and a hammer - make sure they're seated properly.

Cheers Snappage old' boy. You ARE the man, just in case no one has re-inforced that upon you recently.
I seem to recal removing an ABS ring a few years ago and bending it a bit. Luckily I now have a small collection to try again! Awesome Snap... |

Yeah, I rate myself fairly highly . . . .
You can use a thick screwdriver to prise them off, use a piece of metal as a pivot, and tap on the screwy handle, just keep moving it all around and raise the tone wheel bit by bit.

Putting ABS RING TONES (!!) into NON ABS DISK BRAKE ROTORS
First thing to note is removing the ABS TONE RING is easy. Hit the wheel studs out. And yes, I remember doing this previously now. Someone said you couldn't pull the wheel studs out as the ring was in the way one time. And I knocked them out just to see if you could. Second thing is that the early E series brakes are actually a different casting mold to newer ones. There are differences in the radius' of various parts on the internal section. Nothing to worry about. The third interesting thing (well - "interesting" is a term used loosely) is that the ABS rotors have been machined in a lathe to take the ABS ring. You, therefore, need to take 5mm out the middle of the rotor or the middle of the ABS ring. The recess for the ABS ring is 10mm deep, and to make life easy for myself I copied this by knocking the studs out, putting it into a lathe and taking the offending metal out of the meaty section, as shown. Then the ABS ring is pressed back on. When I say pressed, I mean hammered. |

The EB/ED tone wheels are different to EF/EL ones.
Castings might vary between brands - IIRC the tone wheels I swapped across were between discs from the same manufacturer - so were a straight fit.

All good Snappage old mate. The original Ford NON ABS and the other brand NON ABS both had the issue of having no lathe work on the hub from manufacturer. The Ford ABS, and other brand ABS rotors both have had machine work in this area subsequent to casting.
