Try putting the disk rotor on backwards, put the wheel nuts on just enough to hold and use the rotor as a slide hammer.

apparently no, from what I heard... but let him try... Im sure we'll find out.

With the axles.. all you gotta do, is undo the wheels nuts, take wheel off, unscrew the screw, take off the callipers after undoing the bolts which hold it on, and then take the disc off. After which you undo the bolts/nuts (depending on which car you have) which hold the axels on.. you'll see which ones, and then just pull... but as said above it make take some bashing/pulling. Especially if you have never taken them out before.

After that you undo the back plate, and drain the oil, then you undo the bearing cap bolts, and bash thos eout of there, and PRY. The centre comes out with a bit of force.

Note though, to change to a 3.45, the pinion needs to be changed. The pinion is a b**ch to undo, so you might look into doing that before the centre comes out, cos afterwards, there's no way of holding it (no way that has worked for me yet).

Also remember that the crownwheel bolts are all left hand thread (they have an L on them), don't go tightening them, cos they are already tight lol.

Good luck!

haha have fun, we tried to change the ratios on a BA diff, easy to pull apart, but no luck wotsoever with the pinion, its worth paying someone to do it in my opinion, at least it will be adjusted properly and u know its done right.

The pinion is definately a b**ch... they are on there good. For a good reason though lol. And yeah, having it done by a professional will allow for proper adjustments.

Cheers

I pulled down my first diff today. After reading what seemed like really bad ways to crack the pinion nut I drilled a couple of holes in some scrap metal and bolted it to the pinion flange, wedged it so the pinion was locked, then cracked the nut with a breaker bar. Seems to me like to most logical and easiest way to get the pinion out. Maybe Ive broken some golden rule of diff recon im not aware of, but this made what is apparently a hard job really easy and you dont need the center in to do it.

not a bad idea that little tool...
same difference as cracking the pinion with the diff still together and the handbrake on however.. just a thought

As for 3.45LSD into a 3.08 housing, I don't see why it won't work. I swapped mine yesterday (complete axel to axel job, not centres) but both housings have the same part numbers on them, and of course look the same, so I don't see why it won't fit.

In my case, the diff was out and there were no rotors so handbrake was out of the question. The hemi was also in a very sad state and I wouldnt be surprised if cracked before the pinion nut.

Thats a great tool stockstandard... where have you been all my life. lol. I will definately keep that in mind when doing my diff next. And as it seems logical, at the time in my case we were pretty nieave to stick s**t through the holes, and hoping they would catch on the housing. It worked eventually.

As for 3.08 to 3.45.. they look very similar.. but many times Ive been told the housing is different. And If I had a 3.08, Id have to buy a 3.23 housing to stick in a 3.45... hmmm.

Cheers

This is exactly what I have been trying to find out over the last couple of days. I have read just about every diff thread on each of the forums and there is so many contradicting posts. Some say everything after 2.77 can be swapped, some say you need 3.23 or bigger to put 3.45's in, and others say you cant use the 3.23 because it has a different pinion (although I suspect that this might have been a reference to 3.27 ratio diffs). I have now come to the conclusion that 95% of these posts are based on opinions rather than fact and the only way i am going to find out for sure what fits is to start pulling diffs aparts and bolting new centers in.

Also seems odd because ppl are jamming skyline 3.7 and 3.9 gears into just about every housing.

Suppose I could go to a diff place and ask them...

I've heard/read all the misinformation too. but the part numbers on the housings are the SAME. So I don't see any reason why a 3.45 won't fit in a 3.08. I just went the complete rear end, cause I didn't want to hassel of changing centres. It was hard enough as is - I'm still sore.

BTW: I'm loving the new 3.45LSD - great fun.
