If there are any people with an annoying clunk at slower speeds over small bumps mainly on the passenger side i found the problem.
If the tie rod end is ok it is more than likely to be the rack end (joint inside the steering rack boot) To diagnose it cut the cable tie on the inner of the boot and peel it back. with the car on ramps (wheels not floating) start engine and have some one turn the steering wheel back and forth. if its worn you will be able to see movement in the joint. Replaced both today and adjusted toe in and only took about 1 1/2 hrs. Also if the joint is badly worn it will cause toe out resulting in the outer shoulders on the tyre to scuff. |

Interesting... I've noticed the clunking in my front end for a while now but after losing a tyre on the rear (which used to be on the front) I noticed that there was more wear on the outer edges than in the middle. The guy I took it to said it was due to running them under inflated which is certainly a possibility - I don't keep as nearly as watchful an eye on my tyre pressure as I should - but this seems to make sense as well. I'll make sure that I have the tie rod ends checked when I finally get the dough together to replace the back tyres and have the alignment reexamined.

Too lower inflation causes both shoulders to wear and too much causes the inner to wear.
The tie rods are on the outer and the rack ends are on inner (inner tie rods. The reason the outer shoulder wears with toe out is because of the caster angle, as the tie rods and rack ends wear the wheels pull back giving them toe out. The clunking may not only be from the tie rods but a number of things like worn shocks, rack, steering shaft or wheel bearings. It took me a while to find this so i thought id share it. |

When I go over a speed bump or am slightly harder on the brakes that normal or something like that (i think when the front end of my car dips down a bit) i often get a clunk. Sound like suspension to me.
