For the past 6 months ive had a clunking front end whilst under brakes and turning left, ive heard of others here that have had a similar problem. today whilst i was raising the front end i noticed that the torsion bar has been hitting on the chassis on the drivers side!! will replace the D bushes tomorrow and im sure it will fix the clunking that has been so hard to find.hope this help anyothers with the same problem.

where exactly are the d bushes, have same prob with au2, is the torsion bar u r talkin abt the sway bar or some thin else

they are the bushes on the torsion/sway bar, they are held to the chassis with a U shaped clamp just inside of the 90deg bend in the torsion/sway bar, the bushes are in the shape of a D when they are taken out.

As Joolz said. Sway bar, stabiliser bar, same thing. Long black bar that sits along width wise just ahead of the cat converter, parallel with the steering gear. Each end curves upward at around 90 degrees to connect each end to the chassis using D brackets with rubber bushes in them. This stabiliser bar comes down and across width wise, and sits away from anything else in the steering gear. The areas at each end where it curves up at 90 degrees are where the steering gear rubber boots and tie rods are. To fix the D brackets or bushes if there stuffed, just drive the car onto ramps. Remove all of the retaining nuts, washers, bushes, and disconnect sway bar links from the lower control arms. And note, very friggin carefully in which order they come. Write it down as each comes off. This is not the D brackets, these are the fittings at the very ends, each side of the sway bar. Now remove those D brackets or mounting brackets as there called. Work the stabiliser bar off the car. Remove remaining retaining nuts, washers, and bushes and take the remaining links off sway bar. Examine the sway/stabiliser bar and bushes and for wear and tear. Renew parts when necessary. Install exactly the way you removed it. If you have a torque wrench I recommend these tensions: stabiliser link nuts 20nm mounting bracket bolts (D bracket) 20nm ** If I have forgotten something can someone fill the gaps** I've checked my bar out. The bushes don't look great. You may have saved a lot of people a lot of money, including me with that joolz...um..ta |

Thanks - I've spent ages trying to find the same sort of clunk on my ef and now i have a good starting point.

dont worry i looked for ages for thise noise and found it by chance, almost the last thing i thought of, actually found it when fixing my auto haha.

hmmmm we have a similar problem...but i think its a wheel alignmnet issue, because the steering wheel shakes at high speeds...
would i be rite?

wheel allignment wont make the wheels shake at highway speeds... wheel balance can/will.. but neither will account for knocking noises...

if you have a worn rack or the steering shaft of the rack has worn uni's, worn bearing at the fire wall for steering shaft all these can clunk if the wheels are out of balance at higher speeds.

ahhhhh also with shaking at higher speeds, I had this once but only when i had my foot on the brake. Mr Pedders said it was radius rod bushes, which i tended to believe considering the discs were fairly new and my alignment was spot on
That was 12 months ago, never done a thing about it. Now have to add stuffed tie rod ends and god knows what else to the to do list. I have many vibrations and knocks in my car atm
