G'day guys,
This only started getting worse yesterday, so I've got it booked in at the mechanic tomorrow to be looked at but i was wondering if anyone could shed some light on my problem so i don't panic My car is an EF XR6 auto. Its done 261,000 kms, and its due for a service (the spanner came on a couple of weeks ago). It has now started clunking on downshifts when pulling up at the lights, or when slowing down then accelerating again (ie. pulling up at red and light changes green). Sometimes it clunks when it pulls up to a complete halt, and it sounds like its coming from towards the front of the car, but when it clunks when i'm decelerating (not yet stopped) it sounds like its coming from the back of the car! The clunk is much the same tho, one single audible clunk (when radio turned off, window down) and it jolts the car along. Gear changes are still firm when changing up gears, nothing much different. No shift kit has been fitted to the box. hopefully thats a clear enuf description of whats troubling my car, and i hope its not too good an excuse to get the manual conversion done . Thanks in advance fellas

Hmmm, might be uni joints clunking around whilst there is little/no load on the drivetrain. This may explain why upshifts are ok - because the drivetrain is nice and 'tight' when load is present.

good point there...
also, it doesn't matter if the car is cold or warm, it was doing it regardless in normal operating temperatures. there was no excessive load in the car, and its funny cos its not doing it today i don't do burnouts, i give it the occassional squirt but thats about it. i only play a bit in the wet so i wouldn't put it down to unappropriate use. fluid levels are ok, the transmission is about halfway so the mechanic can take care of that tomorrow. maybe i'll get him to look at the diff and uni joints as mentioned.

If the uni joints are worn enough to "clunk" as you described you would certainly notice a deep vibration from the rear at about 80km/h especially when you are decalerating.
The transmission soleniods could be on there way out, there are two that can cause your problem and its a common fault. Soleniod 1 (shift soleniod) and soleniod 5 (damper soleniod) |

your diff is probably kaput mine has exactly the same problem, get your car up on stands put it in neutral grab the tailshaft and try to rotate it, if it has a fair bit of movement the gears in it are very worn, its nothing to worry about though mine has been clunking for 6 months now, also when was your last trans service? i ask because both my trans and diff developed a clunk around the same time, reason it was clunking? bits of it were migrating to the bottom of the transmission pan (in the form of pea sized chunks of metal) - all at 190,000Kms - f**k heavy trailers

Have you checked the engine and transmission mounts for breaks?

its at the mechanics today, so i'll find out what exactly is going on... funny thing is all of yesterday it didn't do it! same driving conditions and it wouldn't do it!
JOSE: u mentioned "heavy trailers". i don't tow much, and when i do its a 6 x 4 trailer with a s**t all in it i dunno if its a load issue... i think its due for a service and the mileage isn't helping

Hmm, I seem to be getting the same thing... The damn thing is doing chirpies and shuddering hard at about any speed/gear change!
By the sounds of it the diff might need a look at or the S5, since it's shuddering/doing chipies and giving me whiplash... Off to the auto trans specialist I think by the sounds of the above comments... Wolfpac

ok mechanics verdict is - nothing. nothing wrong?!
he's checked everything from the solenoids to the uni joints, the diff is in good order, LSD is fine. nothing can really explain it as i couldn't get it to replicate it the days after, nor could my mechanic get the car to do it... oil the fluids have been flushed and replaced, so i'll see how she goes...

did he run a diagnostic for faults? would be a good idea to have the faults if any erased so when its checked again you will know the faults are recent.
anyway good luck finding the problem. |

Last clunk my car had, then turned into clunking and squeaking, then i worked out it was the driver side rear wheel, then I climbed under the car and started to silicon spray the trailing arm mounting points in a hope of stopping the squeaking at least, then I found the top trailing arm at the diff had NO BOLT it was 100% MISSING , dont know how, not sure when, but I put a new bolt in quick smart now is all is quiet again
