Hi Guys,
Just wondering if you can help me out. I am enquiring about suspension needs for my VT V6 turbo. I know its not a ford, but I thought I would ask anyway. The car is currently a daily, however further down the track I will be building a high HP engine for it. Therefore I want to set up all the gear right on it and not have 2 do it twice. The car currently is sitting on 15inch ceptors, but in the future will have 20's. My current suspension is shagged and needs to be replaced so I dont want to replace it suit the 15inch ceptors as they will be gone soon. So in order to do it correct the first time I was looking at coilovers and airbags. But I keep getting mixed reviews about both. I have been told coilovers for a road care crap as they are just too stiff and hard. And in regards to airbags I have been told you car will handle like a boat and for a high HP car are just not suitable. What do you guys recommend? I got a quote from pedders for coilovers and some other things, tell me what you think of the price? am I better off with other gear koni's etc? thanks in advance. If the coilovers are adjustable id definately go them. Theres no point in having a super powerful street weapon sitting bagged on 20s imho. Its a wank. Id say forget the 20s and go for something that will suit the car and the engine your going to be running.

I know what you guys are saying. But by the time the engine is fully built, its going to be a little while yet as I dont want to take any shortcuts.
Further like I said I will end up changing the rims around a few times so I dont want to have to change the suspension each time to suit either. So far the coilovers sound like the best thing. However I have just read alot of negative things about them. (Being very hard on the road, and just not suitable for the road. I have been told they are better for a track car etc. Can someone who has coilovers maybe say sommething different or there view? |

i dont know about people saying coil overs are hard on the road
i replaced my koni yellows and king lows with some pedders extreme coil overs. and imo the koni shocks and king springs were a touch harsher on the bumps compared to the coil overs.. the handling between the 2 seem about the same except the pedders arnt as harsh on the bumps.. on the plus side the coil overs have got more allowable suspension travel compared to std shocks.. |

coil overs should be able to be adjusted to be soft, it also depends on the spring rates that you install as to how hard they are.
if you're planning on decent handling, they coil overs for sure. if its drag racing, then don't rule airbags out. coil overs would be ideal if you want proper tunability though.

Well all i am after is decent control on the road. I dont need it to handle like a F1 car. Once the car is built I will take it to the track and race in it in a straight line. Thats about it.

I have TEIN Coilovers on my Honda Integra VTi-R and they're great. They're adjustable with a spanner and they give a great amount of support. I currently have my car set right on the VIC legal limit (10cm) and of coruse I can feel the bumps in the road, but it isn't much worse than my BA XT with stock suspension. I reckon you should get coilovers over airbags, just make sure you get a good set (and not from an expensive place such as Pedders).

Read some reviews; decide on a set you'd like; find the cheapest place online to get them (probably USA or Japan) and then fit them yourself, or get a friend/specialist to fit them. As I mentioned, TEIN make great coilovers but many of those well-known Japanese brands will so well. |

airbags are for minitrucks and hotrods. the pedders coilovers for VT's are excellent, ive fitted numerous pairs. the rear is a stand-alone spring and shock so technically not a coil over but they have an adjust base for the spring and adjustable length rear shock to retain it. they have 30 bump/rebound settings so if you want and firmer/softer ride etc they are perfect. get pedders front radius rod bushes/mounts because holden ones are grease fillled and have alot of movement in them. then get the inner and outer rear IRS bushes/camber adjusters. job done

I think the comments about coilovers being too harsh are from wankers who basically fit coilovers purely so they can use the shortest, hardest springs they can fit - because that's fully sick moit - so of course when the thing rides like crap they blame the whole setup.
ie. coilovers with appropriate springs should be fine - as various posts here have indicated.

usually coilovers are sold with a suitable weight spring for that particular car. people make the too harsh when they adjust the spring seat soo low that there is not shock travel left. most coil over these days you are able to adjust the strut length without adjusting the spring seat so you can have it low but ride better than stock
