I've picked myself up a 1997 EL Fairmont Ghia which I'm slowly fixing up, its got 245,000km on the clock so I thought it'd be time for some replacement springs and shocks.
The car has aftermarket 17" wheels on it, which I'm ditching in favor of a factory set of 15" alloys with the 215/60/15 tyres, I'm after a luxury ride that feels like it massages my a** cheeks, I don't care about handling as thats not what this car is going to be about. What are my options? I'm looking at standard height replacement king springs, just after a shock absorber choice now, so far I've been offered: Boge KYB Blistein Koni I've been told Blistein are very comfy, but also has the price tag to match, does anyone else here have any suggestions? Thanks much. |

i have bilsteins and i wouldnt say they are comfy, but are definatly not bouncy, take into consideration im running 19"s with superlow springs.they are a stiff ride,
with 15"s or 16"s and standard height they would be alot better

I have/had both KYBs and Konis. KYBs are razor-sharp, but pretty harsh - not what you are looking for. Koni Reds (hydraulic, not gas-pressurised) offer a smooth ride, but excellent control as well - probably ideal for you Ghia. If you are not interested in handling and control at all, you could save some cash and buy bog-standard Monroes and get a cushy ride.

Yeah I'm not too interested in handling, the car is my Weekender cushy long distance cruiser, got a focus and fiesta for cornering duties.
With Monroe is it worth going their Sensatrac shocks? Or just standards? |

I got a reply from lovells, they said their springs are 20% firmer than standards, might give them a miss.

The Lovells are progressively wound and handle better/aren't as harsh as the Kings.
Are you looking at standard height springs? All lowered springs will have a higher spring rate than standard. The boge shocks aren't bad, they aren't the best for handling (bit floaty) but for comfort they are good.

I'm looking at standard height springs and shocks to match, I'm after comfort over handling, my Fairmont is going to be my long distance highway cruiser, I'm also getting rid of the 17" wheels in favor of factory 15" for the higher profile tyres.
Not interested in handling, just ride comfort. If its worth spending extra on lovells over standard king springs I'll go with them. This is what Lovells replied to me : Quote: Thank you for your enquiry,
Our standard height coils are 20% stronger than original so they will be slightly firmer but restore your ride height lost from new. Front: FFS-47 Rear: FRS-42 Rear coils are variable rate for trapment purposes only. Coils are priced at $165.00 pair + Gst + Freight. We do not have shocks available to suit, but any good quality variant will complement our coil. We trust this information assists and should you require any further detail, please don’t hesitate to contact me via email or call on 02 9820 6800. |

If you intend to keep it for at least 3 years defiantly go Koni or Bilstein shock... The lower u go the harder the ride so standard height with Koni or Bilstein would be perfect.

I thought Koni/Blistein where more for sporty applications, eg stiff ride? Also any opinions on Lovells standard, vs King Springs standard? |

Interesting, also where do I go about getting suspension bushes, I just want a kit which contains everything i need, unfortunately I can only find nolothane ones online, I don't want anything performance unfortunately.
On a side note, how kick a** is that speed sensitive power steering on these things? Its like driving my WS Fiesta with its electric power steering at slow speeds, so easy to turn, could do it with one little finger. |

Super Pro bushes are really good and there a little harder than standard bushes...
http://www.superpro.com.au/ I got standard height Bilstein with a low spring so if u decide to go low spring u can, and im sure u can do the same with koni. If you want to go lower than low spring u will need a short shock...

I've decided on standard height springs, downsizing from 17" to factory 15" wheel, talking about superpro, someone recommended me "super pro comfort".
Are they better than standard rubber replacements? |

Super Pro have different hardness bushes so give them a call and ask for part numbers for the softess bushes, mind you there still a little harder than standard....
Im going to fit super pro in my whole front end of my EF XR6 early next year so i can let you know how they go. As far as im aware if you click your model on the online catalogue they show the soft compund bushes...
